Chapter 5

Evelyn Cross did not enter like a visitor.

She entered like the building had called her by name.

The trauma doors opened.

Two administrators followed.

A security supervisor appeared behind them.

Conversations stopped in layers.

Evelyn’s black overcoat moved slightly as she crossed the bay, her silver-blonde hair immaculate despite the rain on the shoulders of her coat.

She did not ask where Claire was.

She knew.

Her eyes went straight to the bed.

For half a second, her expression cracked.

Not enough for everyone.

Enough for Claire.

Then Evelyn looked at Martha.

Recognition passed between the two women like a blade.

“Step away from her bed. Now.”

Martha tried to recover.

“I’m her mother.”

Evelyn’s voice stayed calm.

“No.”

One word.

The room froze.

Robert stepped in.

“Who the hell are you?”

One administrator answered before Evelyn could.

“Mr. Bennett, this trauma bay is now restricted.”

Dr. Cole looked from Evelyn to the administrators.

“What authority?”

The older administrator swallowed.

“Executive emergency authority.”

Robert scoffed.

“This is a public hospital.”

Evelyn finally turned toward him.

“And still not a marketplace.”

Robert’s face reddened.

Martha did not speak.

She was staring at Evelyn with terror that looked old.

Older than the accident.

Older than Claire’s injuries.

Older than Daniel.

Evelyn stepped closer to Claire’s bed, but not too close.

She did not touch her.

She seemed to understand that Claire had already been touched too much without permission.

“Claire,” she said gently. “My name is Evelyn Cross. I need you to stay awake if you can.”

Claire’s eyes opened a little wider behind the oxygen mask.

The name meant something.

She had seen it.

On donor plaques in hospitals.

On medical foundation letters.

On a sealed envelope her parents once burned in the backyard when she was thirteen.

Martha whispered, “You have no right to be here.”

Evelyn did not look away from Claire.

“I have had rights stolen from me before.”

Martha’s knees seemed to weaken.

Dr. Cole placed himself more firmly between Robert and the bed.

Laura stood at Claire’s side.

The evidence sleeve lay sealed on the tray.

The forged DNR had not saved Martha.
