Chapter 10

The full security log was not revealed.

No recorded evidence was opened.

Owen did not arrive.

Police did not intervene.

Divorce papers were not served.

Financial consequences remained unseen.

The confrontation ended in the warm-lit hallway outside the Westchester bedroom, with Evelyn Carter standing beneath the small home-security camera, one hand over her seven-month pregnant belly and the other holding the phone Damon had failed to take from her.

Inside the bedroom, the unmade bed remained visible.

The discarded lingerie lay beneath the bench.

The open closet still held rows of maternity coats, one of them wrinkled from Claire’s desperate grip.

Damon stood shirtless in the doorway, belt still unfastened, face tight with anger he could no longer disguise as concern.

Claire stood behind him in dark clothing, engagement ring catching the lamplight, eyes fixed on Evelyn’s phone as if it were already speaking.

The ultrasound photograph was safe inside Evelyn’s leather bag.

The baby moved once beneath her palm.

That tiny pressure steadied her more than any apology could have.

Evelyn looked from Damon to Claire.

No screaming.

No begging.

No collapse.

Only a calm so complete it frightened them both.

For months, they had counted on her exhaustion.

Her pregnancy.

Her trust.

Her desire to keep peace.

They had mistaken all of it for weakness.

Evelyn unlocked her phone again.

The home-security app opened, unreadable from their view, but clear enough to make Claire inhale sharply.

Damon took one step forward.

Evelyn did not move.

“Good,” she said quietly. “Then you won’t mind me checking who entered my house.”

Her thumb hovered above the access history.

Claire’s ring flashed.

May you like

Damon froze.

And the screen cut to black before the house began telling the truth.
