Chapter 7

Claire started crying properly then.
Tears down both cheeks.
Breath hitching.
One hand over her mouth.
Evelyn had seen Claire cry like that before.
At funerals.
At Owen’s proposal.
During the baby shower toast when she said she could not wait to become “Aunt Claire.”
Now the tears looked rehearsed and real at the same time.
“I never meant to hurt you,” Claire said.
Evelyn watched her.
“You hid in my closet.”
Claire flinched.
“I panicked.”
“You wore your engagement ring into my bedroom.”
Claire looked down as if noticing it for the first time.
That insulted Evelyn more than if she had defended herself.
Damon said, “Claire, stop talking.”
Evelyn’s gaze moved to him.
“Why? Afraid she’ll say something useful?”
Damon stepped toward the phone again.
Evelyn lifted it higher.
“Try.”
One word.
Quiet.
Clear.
Damon stopped.
Because even he understood the optics now.
Pregnant wife near the doorway.
Husband shirtless.
Best friend half-hidden in closet.
Phone recording possible.
Security app open.
A lunge would not look like concern.
It would look like exactly what it was.
Claire whispered, “Owen can’t know like this.”
Evelyn turned back to her.
There it was.
Not I am sorry.
Not I betrayed you.
Not are you okay?
Owen can’t know.
Evelyn felt something inside her detach.
She had been carrying grief, shock, humiliation, and rage all at once. But that sentence simplified everything.
Claire did not want forgiveness.
She wanted damage control.
Damon did too.
That made them a team.
And Evelyn was no longer on it.
She looked at Claire’s ring.
“Did he choose the sapphire because he thought it meant loyalty?”
Claire’s face crumpled.
Damon snapped, “That’s cruel.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“No. Cruel is letting my fiancé plan a wedding while I hide in his friend’s closet.”
Damon’s mouth closed.
For the first time, Claire looked at Evelyn with fear that was not only about being caught.
May you like
It was about being known.
