Chapter 8

Evelyn did not open the full access history.
Not yet.
Her thumb hovered above it, and that was enough to change the room.
Damon looked at the phone the way guilty men look at locked doors.
Claire looked at it like a witness.
Evelyn understood then that the security log was not only proof of today.
It might be a calendar.
A map of every afternoon Claire entered while Evelyn was at appointments.
Every evening Damon claimed he was late.
Every morning Claire stopped by “just to check on her” after already having been inside.
The thought made Evelyn nauseous.
She placed one hand over her belly and breathed slowly.
The baby shifted.
Small.
Alive.
Grounding.
Damon noticed and tried to use it.
“You’re stressing the baby.”
Evelyn laughed once.
A broken, quiet sound.
“I am?”
He stepped carefully closer, hands raised as if he were reasonable.
“Let’s calm down.”
“Don’t say we.”
“Evelyn.”
“You and Claire can calm down.”
Claire whispered, “Please don’t do this while you’re pregnant.”
Evelyn’s eyes moved to her.
“Funny. You did.”
That landed.
Claire looked away.
Damon’s jaw tightened.
“We need to talk privately.”
“There is no private left.”
“This is our marriage.”
Evelyn looked at Claire.
“Apparently not.”
Damon’s voice sharpened.
“If you show Owen anything, you’ll destroy her life.”
Evelyn went very still.
There it was.
The threat wrapped as concern.
Not don’t hurt yourself.
Not let me explain.
Don’t tell Owen.
Protect Claire.
Protect Damon.
Protect everyone but the pregnant woman standing in the bedroom holding evidence of a family being born into lies.
Evelyn turned the phone slightly so neither of them could see the screen.
“I haven’t shown anyone anything.”
Damon exhaled.
“Good.”
She looked at him.
“I said haven’t.”
His relief died.
No full security log opened.
No recorded evidence played.
No Owen arriving.
No police.
No divorce papers.
Just the power of one word changing tense.
Haven’t.
May you like
Yet.
