Chapter 2

Evelyn had come home early because the baby stopped moving for twenty minutes.

That was the truth Damon would later try to bury under uglier stories.

He would say she was paranoid.

Hormonal.

Jealous.

Unstable.

But at 4:16 that afternoon, Evelyn had sat in her parked car outside the obstetric clinic, one palm pressed under her ribs, whispering, “Come on, sweetheart. Kick for me.”

Then the baby moved.

One sharp nudge.

Then another.

Relief made her cry so suddenly she laughed through it.

The doctor told her everything looked fine but advised rest.

“Seven months is not the time to push yourself,” she said kindly. “Go home. Put your feet up. Let someone take care of you.”

Evelyn almost called Damon.

Then stopped.

Lately, calling Damon made her feel like she was asking permission to exist.

He had become irritated by small needs.

A ride to appointments.

A late-night pharmacy run.

Help carrying laundry upstairs.

He said he was stressed.

He said the baby made her emotional.

He said pregnancy had turned every ordinary inconvenience into a crisis.

Claire said similar things, but sweeter.

“You know Damon loves you,” Claire would say, touching Evelyn’s arm. “He just doesn’t express pressure well.”

Claire had been Evelyn’s best friend for twelve years.

College roommate.

Maid of honor.

Emergency contact.

The woman who threw the baby shower and cried while folding tiny white onesies.

The woman who sat beside Evelyn choosing registry items and said, “Your daughter is going to have the safest home in Westchester.”

Evelyn believed her.

That afternoon, she bought a framed copy of the ultrasound photo from the clinic kiosk.

The baby’s profile was clear.

Tiny nose.

Curled hand.

A life growing beneath her heart while the adults around her became harder to understand.

Evelyn drove home slowly through Westchester’s quiet streets, imagining telling Damon that their daughter had scared her and then kicked like she was already stubborn.

She imagined him softening.

Maybe apologizing.

Maybe touching her belly the way he used to.

Instead, she opened the bedroom door and saw her husband half dressed.

Then the closet moved.

And the world she had been trying to save became very still.
