Chapter 4

Damon had always loved controlling the first version of a story.

At parties, he told people Evelyn was “sensitive” before she ever spoke.

At family dinners, he joked that pregnancy had made her “dramatic but adorable.”

When he came home late, he explained before she asked.

When Claire stayed too long, he made the concern sound ridiculous before Evelyn could shape it into a sentence.

He did not lie loudly.

He prepared rooms.

That was why the phone scared him.

Not the photo itself.

The loss of authorship.

Evelyn snapped the unmade bed.

Damon lunged one step forward.

She shifted sideways, protecting her belly with one arm.

“Don’t come near me.”

The words surprised all three of them.

Damon froze.

Claire’s eyes filled.

Evelyn photographed the lingerie beneath the bench.

Black lace.

Not hers.

She had not worn lingerie in months because her body ached at night and her belly made sleep a negotiation.

Damon’s belt hung open.

Click.

Claire in the closet.

Click.

The ultrasound photo still in Evelyn’s hand.

Click.

Damon’s expression changed from panic to anger.

“Put the phone down. You’re imagining this.”

Evelyn looked at him slowly.

The sentence was almost impressive.

He was standing shirtless in their bedroom.

His mistress was inside her closet.

Another woman’s lingerie was on the floor.

And he still reached for the old weapon.

Doubt.

Evelyn almost laughed.

Instead, she opened the security app.

The screen was unreadable from where Damon stood, but he knew the app.

He had installed the system himself after a burglary two streets over.

Front door.

Garage.

Hallway.

Stair landing.

Bedroom corridor.

Closet camera? No.

Bedroom camera? No.

But entry logs existed.

Smart lock access.

Door openings.

Code use.

Motion triggers.

Damon knew it because he had insisted the system made their home safer.

Evelyn looked at the phone.

Then at Claire.

Claire’s face drained of color faster than Damon’s.

That mattered.

Because Claire had not just appeared in the house.

She had entered somehow.

With a code.

With a key.

With permission.

Evelyn’s thumb hovered over access history.

May you like

“Good,” she said. “Then you won’t mind me checking who entered my house.”
