Chapter 6

The ultrasound photograph became heavier in Evelyn’s hand.

A child existed between all this.

That was the fact Damon and Claire seemed to keep forgetting.

Not an idea.

Not a due date.

Not a nursery color palette.

A child.

A daughter who moved when Evelyn drank cold juice.

A daughter whose tiny spine had appeared on the scan like a line of light.

A daughter who did not deserve to begin life inside a house where adults hid in closets and called betrayal imagination.

Evelyn placed the ultrasound carefully on the dresser.

Not because she stopped holding it.

Because she wanted both hands free.

Damon noticed the change.

“Evelyn.”

His tone softened.

There it was.

The husband voice.

The one that used to make her forgive him before he apologized.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“I made a mistake.”

Claire made a small sound from the closet.

Evelyn looked toward her.

“A mistake usually happens once.”

Damon swallowed.

“You don’t know what happened.”

“I know what I saw.”

“You saw something out of context.”

Evelyn stared at the bed.

The lingerie.

The open belt.

The woman hiding behind maternity coats.

Then she looked back at him.

“What context would help?”

Damon’s face hardened again.

Softness had failed.

Control returned.

“If you open that app, you will make this worse.”

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“For whom?”

Claire’s eyes closed.

Damon did not answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

Worse for him.

Worse for Claire.

Worse for the story they planned to tell Owen.

Worse for the lie that Evelyn was unstable, hormonal, imagining things.

Not worse for the truth.

The truth was already standing in the room, half dressed and shaking.

Evelyn picked up her shoulder bag from where it had slipped near the door.

Damon’s eyes followed it.

“What are you doing?”

“Making sure I have my keys.”

“You’re not leaving.”

The sentence came out too fast.

Too familiar.

Too entitled.

Evelyn’s body went cold.

Damon heard himself and tried to soften it.

“I mean, not like this.”

Evelyn looked at the phone again.

The app glowed in her hand.

“Then don’t give me a reason to call someone from this room.”

Claire finally stepped fully out of the closet.

Still clutching the coat.

Still wearing Owen’s ring.

May you like

Still looking more afraid of exposure than of hurting her best friend.
