Chapter 3

The first thing Evelyn recognized was not Claire’s face.

It was the ring.

Owen had proposed to Claire six months earlier in a vineyard in Napa, and Claire called Evelyn from the bathroom before saying yes.

“I don’t know if I love the setting,” Claire whispered, half laughing, half crying. “But the ring is perfect, right?”

Evelyn had asked for a picture.

Oval diamond.

Thin gold band.

Tiny hidden sapphire inside the setting because Owen said Claire needed “something blue” before the wedding.

Evelyn cried when she saw it.

Not because the ring was beautiful.

Because Claire was family in every way that did not require blood.

Now that same ring gripped Evelyn’s cream maternity coat from inside the closet.

The coat Evelyn bought when her belly first became too round for her old winter jackets.

The coat Claire helped her choose.

“This one makes you look elegant,” Claire had said. “Not just pregnant.”

Evelyn remembered laughing.

She remembered believing the compliment.

Now Claire stood behind that coat like a thief hiding behind the life she had helped decorate.

When Evelyn pulled the closet door open, Claire did not immediately speak.

Her eyes went first to Damon.

Not to Evelyn.

To Damon.

That was the second betrayal.

The first instinct of a guilty person reveals the person they fear losing most.

Claire’s lips trembled.

“Please… let me explain.”

Evelyn stared at her.

Dark clothing.

Bare feet.

Hair loose.

The ring Owen gave her flashing beneath the closet light.

A maternity coat clutched around her body like modesty could disguise the shape of what had happened.

Damon stepped forward.

“Evelyn, don’t.”

That one word confirmed more than any confession.

Don’t photograph.

Don’t open the app.

Don’t ask who entered.

Don’t think.

Don’t see.

Don’t become dangerous.

For months, Damon had used that word whenever Evelyn got too close to something.

Don’t check my phone.

Don’t ask Claire to leave early.

Don’t call Owen about dinner.

Don’t make this weird.

Evelyn finally understood the word had never been protection.

It had been a leash.

She raised her phone.

Click.

The shutter sound was soft.

Damon’s face hardened.

Claire whispered, “Evelyn…”

But Evelyn had already taken the first photo.

And the first photo changed her from victim to witness.
