Chapter 5

Claire had a house code.

Evelyn remembered giving it to her.

It happened on a rainy Tuesday when Evelyn was fourteen weeks pregnant and vomiting so hard she could barely stand.

Damon had been in Boston.

Owen had been at work.

Claire arrived with ginger tea, crackers, and a soft blanket Evelyn still used on the nursery chair.

“You should give me a code,” Claire said gently. “What if something happens and Damon is away?”

Evelyn did.

No hesitation.

No suspicion.

She even made Claire laugh by naming the code “AuntClaire” in the home app.

For weeks after that, Claire came by often.

Too often, maybe.

But Evelyn was lonely, and loneliness can dress intrusion as comfort.

Claire folded baby clothes.

Rearranged pantry shelves.

Sat on the bedroom floor while Evelyn tried maternity coats in front of the mirror.

She knew where Damon kept his cuff links.

She knew which side of the bed Evelyn slept on.

She knew which closet drawer held the ultrasound album.

She knew the rhythm of the house.

That knowledge now stood inside the closet with Evelyn’s coat pulled around it.

Damon said, “Evelyn, you are not thinking clearly.”

She did not look at him.

She looked at Claire.

“When did you start using the code without telling me?”

Claire’s mouth parted.

Damon cut in.

“She didn’t.”

Evelyn smiled then.

Not warmly.

“Interesting. I didn’t ask you.”

The room tightened.

Damon hated being excluded from an answer.

Claire looked down at her ring.

The hidden sapphire caught the lamp.

Evelyn thought of Owen, who had toasted at their engagement dinner and said, “Claire is the most loyal person I know.”

Loyal.

The word felt obscene now.

Claire whispered, “It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”

Evelyn’s hand tightened around the phone.

That sentence was not denial.

Not apology.

It was logistics.

Not supposed to happen like this meant it was supposed to happen another way.

Quietly.

Repeatedly.

Without Evelyn coming home early.

Without the ultrasound photo in her hand.

Without a security log waiting to tell the order of doors.

Damon stepped closer again.

“Enough.”

Evelyn took one step back toward the hallway.

Not fleeing.

Positioning.

She wanted the doorway behind her.

She wanted space.

She wanted the stairs, the exit, the phone signal, and the baby protected.

Her thumb stayed above the app.

No full log opened yet.

No evidence revealed.

Only the threat of truth.
