Chapter 12 - THE NURSERY ARGUMENTWhat happened before I fell became clearer from the current recording.

I had brought Dana into the nursery because Ivy was with my mother for the afternoon.
I wanted privacy.
I asked:
“Have you been giving Ivy medication?”
Dana answered:
“No.”
I said:
“Eric saw you give her pink liquid.”
“Allergy medicine.”
“Without telling us?”
“You told me she could have children’s medicine.”
“I told you acetaminophen once for a fever after I confirmed the dose with her pediatrician.”
“Same thing.”
“No.”
Then:
“I’m ending your employment.”
Silence.
Dana:
“For what?”
“Because I don’t trust you.”
That sentence changed her.
She said I was unstable.
Hormonal.
Paranoid.
She reminded me how much she had done for the family.
Then:
“You’ll come crawling back after the baby.”
I said:
“No.”
She picked up a bottle from the warming tray.
I thought she was cleaning.
Then:
“This house used to stay clean.”
I laughed because I was nervous.
“We have a toddler.”
“And now another one.”
“You’re talking about children like dirt.”
“Somebody has to clean after all of you.”
I stepped toward the door.
She blocked me.
That was when I sent Luke the message.
Something is wrong. Come.
Then Dana knocked the tray.
Milk spilled.
Glass fell.
She told me to clean it.
I refused.
The first bottle swung.
Missed my head.
I went down.
The second one rose.
Then Luke arrived.
No hidden mastermind.
May you like
No elaborate plan.
A confrontation escalated in less than three minutes.
