Chapter 8 - WHAT THE OLD AUDIO SAIDThe file was forty-eight minutes.
Most of it was boring.
Dishes.
Cabinet doors.
Children talking.
A cartoon in another room.
Then Dana’s voice.
“June, drink.”
A toddler whining.
“No.”
Dana:
“Drink it.”
More crying.
Then:
“You want the closet?”
Silence.
A small gulping sound.
Later:
“That’s better. Sleep.”
Twenty minutes after that, Dana spoke on the phone.
Investigators could hear only her side.
“I told you, babies are easier when they sleep.”
Pause.
“No, not too much.”
Pause.
“I know how much.”
That sentence became significant.
Not because it identified the substance.
Because it suggested intentional dosing.
Monica said she remembered seeing an antihistamine bottle afterward.
But memory years later is weak evidence without corroboration.
Pharmacy experts later explained how some sedating antihistamines can be dangerous in young children and should not be used simply to make them sleep.
Nobody gave dosage instructions in court.
