Chapter 7 - MONICA’S HOUSEMonica had two children.
At the time Dana worked for her:
Eli, four.
June, eighteen months.
Dana lasted five months.
Monica noticed June became extremely sleepy after afternoon care.
Dana said:
“Growth spurt.”
Then Eli told her:
“Dana gives June sleepy juice.”
Monica confronted Dana.
Dana denied it.
So Monica left the recorder running in the kitchen one afternoon.
No hidden camera.
Audio.
The recording captured Dana telling June:
“Drink it. Your mom likes you quiet when she gets home.”
Then later:
“If you spit it out, you sit in the laundry room.”
Monica fired her that evening.
Did she call police?
No.
That question tortured her.
Why not?
Because June did not appear injured.
Because Monica could not identify the liquid.
Because Dana claimed it was children’s allergy medication Monica had previously approved once.
Because Monica feared she had recorded illegally.
Because her husband wanted the problem over.
Because people make small decisions before they know they are part of a pattern.
She wrote a negative reference.
Dana never listed Monica as a future employer.
The older recorder eventually sat in a drawer.
Monica sold it while decluttering.
