He joined Samuel’s security detail after surviving a private-plane crash that supposedly killed him. Vivian told Ethan his father died instantly.
In reality, Robert left after discovering Vivian and Pierce used Whitlock clinics to manipulate pregnancies.
He approached Samuel anonymously, intending to expose the program.
Samuel hired him without recognizing him because reconstructive surgery altered his face after the crash.
Robert later learned Claire’s reproductive samples remained hidden inside the governor’s residence.
He stayed to protect them.
Or claimed he did.
Daniel found Robert at an unused state airfield with Sarah Keene.
Sarah was alive and medically stable but terrified.
Robert surrendered without resistance.
“I was moving her away from Pierce.”
“Why not call police?” Daniel asked.
“Pierce owned the clinic records. Vivian controlled the Whitlock board. Monica controlled Samuel’s legal office. I trusted no channel.”
“You kidnapped a pregnant woman.”
“I removed her from confinement.”
“Without asking where she wanted to go.”
Robert lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Another protector making choices over a woman’s body.
Sarah was transported to an independent hospital under her own medical authority. Amelia spoke with her through a secure video call.
Neither knew how to begin.
Sarah placed one hand over her abdomen.
“I’m sorry.”
“You did nothing to me.”
“I’m carrying your embryo.”
“You are carrying a child inside your body. That matters.”
Sarah began crying.
“Do you want him?”
The question contained fear of losing the baby and fear of being forced to keep him.
Amelia answered carefully.
“I want you safe. I want him safe. Everything else must be decided without anyone coercing either of us.”
Sarah looked relieved.
No trust, will, or family claim would determine their relationship before independent counseling and legal review.
Robert revealed Pierce’s final plan.
Amelia’s daughter and Sarah’s son were meant to be registered as twins despite different gestational mothers and birth dates.
The Whitlock trust permitted twin heirs to share control.
Pierce would manipulate records so both children appeared delivered by Amelia.
If Amelia died or became incapacitated, Vivian would gain authority over both.
If Vivian was removed, Samuel would.
Pierce remained the medical executor managing their inheritance.
Every adult competed while he controlled the documents.
“Where is Pierce?” Amelia asked Robert.
“He has another clinic.”
“Where?”
“Under the state capitol medical annex.”
Samuel stared at him.
The annex had been built during the previous administration as an emergency shelter. Its maternity wing never appeared on public plans.
Monica’s altered inheritance clause had forced investigations toward the capitol.
She may have known.
Police entered through maintenance tunnels.
They found Dr. Pierce inside a surgical suite destroying records.
Officers arrested him before he could ignite the final cabinet.
He smiled when Daniel mentioned the clock recording.
“Vivian always enjoyed performing.”
“You planned the assault?” Daniel asked.
“I planned pressure. Vivian supplied temperament.”
“Why destroy Amelia’s monitor?”
“To establish a maternal health event.”
“You risked killing her.”
“Risk creates legal clarity.”
Pierce treated violence as administration.
The surviving files documented hundreds of unauthorized genetic collections.
Claire.
Vivian.
Ethan.
Amelia.
Robert.
Monica.
Sarah.
Lucas.
And one additional name:
Samuel Cross Jr.
Samuel had no known son.
The sample date was twenty-eight years earlier.
Four months before Amelia’s birth.
Pierce claimed Samuel fathered a child with another woman while Claire was pregnant.
Samuel denied it.
DNA records suggested the son existed.
His current identity was hidden behind the code SCJ-EXECUTOR.
The Executor who issued false court orders and directed Peter may not have been Jonathan Vale.
It may have been Samuel’s secret son.
Then Pierce laughed.
