Chapter 8 - The Woman in Room TwelvePolice located Monica Lane through Northbridge’s emergency records.

She had been admitted under another name to a secure room beneath the maternity residence.

Room Twelve.

When officers entered, they found Monica unconscious beside an empty IV bag. Her wrists carried old surgical scars. A biometric bracelet had been locked around her arm.

Dr. Lawrence Pierce was gone.

Monica regained consciousness at the state medical center.

DNA testing confirmed she was Vivian’s biological daughter and Ethan’s older sister.

Her birth name was Eliza Whitlock.

Vivian requested immediate contact.

Monica refused.

“She knew I was alive,” Monica told Daniel.

Vivian had discovered the truth eighteen years earlier. Instead of exposing the clinic, she made a private agreement with Pierce.

Monica would receive an education, identity, and career.

In exchange, she would work inside the Cross administration and recover Claire’s patent records.

Vivian treated her missing daughter as an asset after finding her.

“Why help her?” Amelia asked during a supervised hospital visit.

Monica looked exhausted.

“Because she said obedience was the only way to earn my real name.”

The answer echoed through every family scheme.

Monica entered Samuel’s office using a fabricated background. She became indispensable.

At first, she stole minor documents.

Later, she discovered Claire’s diary and inheritance clause.

She began working against Vivian secretly.

The alteration benefiting Samuel was not designed to give him control permanently.

It was meant to force the conspiracy into public court, where sealed Whitlock records could be subpoenaed.

“You rewrote my mother’s wishes,” Amelia said.

“I believed I was creating exposure.”

“You made my father look guilty.”

“I needed Vivian to move.”

“You used my pregnancy as pressure.”

Monica lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

Pain did not excuse strategy.

Yet Monica’s files revealed the alternate pregnancy was her attempt to save another woman.

Northbridge patient Sarah Keene had been implanted with a stolen embryo. Monica discovered it and created false records linking it to the Whitlock heir so Vivian would protect the pregnancy rather than terminate it.

“Is the baby Amelia and Ethan’s?” Daniel asked.

“I don’t know.”

Pierce controlled the actual genetic records.

Monica knew only that the embryo came from the original Cross-Whitlock research archive.

The male fetus might be related to Amelia.

Or to Monica.

Or to Claire.

Pierce designed uncertainty intentionally.

As long as multiple families believed the child could secure their inheritance, everyone protected his program.

Sarah Keene had vanished during the police raid.

A service camera showed a nurse moving her into a black ambulance minutes before officers entered.

The driver was Dr. Pierce.

Monica believed he intended to take Sarah to the original Whitlock research clinic, closed after Claire’s death.

The building still stood beneath a redevelopment site outside the city.

Samuel authorized a search warrant but did not order Amelia to remain behind.

He asked what she wanted.

“I want the truth,” she said.

“You are medically unstable.”

“I know.”

“I want to stop you.”

“I know.”

He closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

Amelia participated remotely from her hospital room while Daniel’s team entered the abandoned clinic.

The basement contained preserved embryos, blood samples, and infant records dating back thirty-five years.

One file carried Amelia’s name.

Created two years before she was born.

Another carried Ethan’s.

Created five years before his birth.

Their future marriage had been modeled before either existed.

A third file was labeled:

PROJECT HEIR—PAIRING A/E SUCCESSFUL.

The completion date was six years ago.

Amelia and Ethan met four years ago.

Someone considered the pairing successful before their first meeting.

Daniel opened the attached photograph.

It showed a young woman in a hospital gown holding a newborn baby.

The woman looked exactly like Amelia.

The date was six years earlier.

The child’s wristband read:

May you like

BABY CROSS WHITLOCK.

👉 The abandoned clinic contained proof that a woman using Amelia’s identity gave birth to a Cross-Whitlock child years before Amelia and Ethan ever met.
