Chapter 15 - The Daughter They Were Waiting ForThree days after Vivian’s assault, Amelia remained inside a secure maternity wing.

Her condition had stabilized.

Her unborn daughter’s heartbeat remained strong.

No final charges had been resolved.

Vivian remained detained while prosecutors separated tactical claims from undeniable violence.

Pierce sat in federal custody but continued withholding passwords.

Adrian underwent independent DNA testing.

Samuel faced political investigation.

Ethan stayed away unless Amelia requested him.

Monica cooperated with police while processing the revelation that every identity in her life had been assigned.

Robert Whitlock entered protective custody.

Sarah Keene remained missing.

The open questions outnumbered the answers.

Amelia looked toward the antique clock now resting on the overbed table.

Its camera had been disconnected.

She alone controlled whether it recorded again.

Samuel sat near the window.

“I can resign today.”

“That is your decision.”

“I want to make it because the truth damaged public trust.”

“Then don’t make it because you want me to forgive you.”

He nodded.

Ethan waited in the hallway.

Amelia had not decided whether he would return as husband, co-parent, witness, or someone she once loved.

She refused to decide while danger demanded speed.

A nurse entered carrying independent genetic results recovered from blood found in Sarah’s abandoned ambulance.

The report proved the released scan was falsified.

Sarah’s fetus was genetically Amelia and Ethan’s.

Pierce had created the false sibling pairing to provoke panic and justify moving Sarah before testing.

The unborn boy was their stolen embryo.

Amelia closed her eyes.

Two children.

One daughter inside her.

One son inside Sarah.

Both created from the same fertility cycle.

Neither belonged to an inheritance system.

The nurse placed another file on the table.

The blood found inside the ambulance showed Sarah was alive when removed. No evidence indicated serious injury.

A traffic camera captured the vehicle that collected her.

It belonged to the original Cross Biomedical Foundation.

The driver wore the foundation’s medical-security uniform.

Samuel looked confused.

“That unit was dissolved after Claire died.”

Someone had reactivated it.

Daniel Ruiz entered with the recovered biometric ring sealed in an evidence case.

“The ring transmitted one more signal after we removed it.”

“From where?” Amelia asked.

“Not from the ring itself.”

A second device with the same biometric identity had come online.

Someone had cloned Amelia’s health profile.

The signal originated beneath the clinic.

Police reopened the private maternity center’s lower floor.

Architectural plans showed only storage.

Behind a locked service wall, officers discovered an elevator descending into an underground ward.

Amelia watched through Daniel’s tablet.

The doors opened.

The hidden level contained six maternity rooms, an operating theater, cryogenic storage, and a nursery prepared for infants with disputed inheritance claims.

One room contained Sarah’s clothing.

Another contained Julia Mercer’s old medical file.

A third displayed Amelia’s name.

The bed was occupied.

A woman lay beneath hospital sheets wearing an identical biometric ring.

Her face had been surgically altered to resemble Amelia.

She was conscious.

Terrified.

And heavily pregnant.

Daniel moved closer.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked toward the camera.

“My name is Claire Lawson.”

The surname caused Samuel to rise.

The woman continued.

“They told me I was carrying Amelia’s daughter.”

Amelia’s hand moved over her abdomen.

“That’s impossible.”

Claire Lawson began crying.

“They said the baby in your room was the replacement.”

The underground monitor displayed a female fetal heartbeat.

The pregnancy was at the same gestational age as Amelia’s.

Another woman carried another female embryo connected to the same family program.

Police searched the remaining rooms.

No Sarah.

No Pierce accomplice.

Only rows of prepared bassinets.

Each carried a silver plate.

Whitlock Heir.

Cross Heir.

Vale Heir.

Continuity Heir.

At the end of the corridor stood a locked nursery door marked:

ORIGINAL DAUGHTER.

Samuel stared at the words.

The door required two biometric signals.

Amelia’s.

And Vivian’s.

Vivian was brought to the secure entrance under police restraint.

For the first time since the assault, she looked genuinely terrified.

“What is behind that door?” Amelia asked.

Vivian shook her head.

“I thought Pierce destroyed this level.”

“You knew it existed.”

“I was born here.”

Samuel looked at her.

“So was Claire?”

Vivian’s eyes filled.

“So were all of us.”

The officers placed Vivian’s hand against one scanner.

Amelia authorized Daniel to use the biometric sample from her ring for the second.

The nursery lock opened.

Inside was no infant.

A woman in her late fifties sat beside an empty cradle.

Her face resembled Amelia’s mother.

Samuel whispered:

“Claire.”

The woman stood.

She looked directly at Amelia.

“I am not your mother.”

Then she turned toward Vivian.

“I’m her daughter.”

Vivian’s knees weakened.

The daughter she had been told died decades earlier was alive.

The woman pointed toward the empty cradle.

“Pierce moved Sarah before you opened the door.”

“Where?” Daniel demanded.

She looked toward the clinic’s dark ventilation tunnel.

“To the governor’s residence.”

Samuel stared.

“We searched it.”

“Not the room beneath Claire’s grave.”

Amelia’s phone vibrated.

A live video appeared.

Sarah sat inside an underground chamber holding her abdomen. Ethan stood beside her with his hands raised. Armed men surrounded them.

Behind the camera, a woman spoke.

The voice was Claire Cross’s.

Not Julia’s imitation.

Not an old recording.

The real voice Samuel remembered.

“Amelia, your mother did not die in that clinic.”

Samuel stopped breathing.

The camera turned.

Claire Cross appeared older, scarred, and alive.

She placed one hand on Sarah’s shoulder.

“Your father heard Vivian’s confession,” Claire said. “Now he must hear mine.”

Amelia stared at the mother she had mourned for twenty-seven years.

Claire looked toward Samuel.

“I created the first heir program.”

The feed shook as alarms began sounding beneath the governor’s residence.

Claire’s expression became urgent.

“And if Amelia’s daughter is born before we shut it down, every child in this program becomes legally hers.”

The screen went black.
