Chapter 5 - The Husband at the WindowEthan claimed he knew nothing about an alternate pregnancy.

Amelia wanted to believe him.
Then police recovered his private messages with Vivian.
Three months earlier, she wrote:
The family contingency is progressing. Do not ask questions you cannot answer honestly.
Ethan replied:
Just make sure Amelia is never harmed.
Vivian answered:
Then keep her calm and compliant.
He had not asked what contingency meant.
He had not objected to the language.
He had accepted the benefit of ignorance.
“You knew she had a second plan,” Amelia said.
“I thought she was restructuring the trust.”
“You knew it involved my pregnancy.”
“She told me she had arranged a legal safeguard.”
“A child is not a safeguard.”
“I didn’t know there was another child.”
Amelia turned toward the window.
For months, Ethan persuaded her not to change clinics. He asked her to share medical passwords. He brought her biometric ring to Vivian’s technology consultant for “security updates.”
The ring transmitted her vital signs to Samuel.
It may also have transmitted reproductive data to Vivian.
A forensic engineer examined it.
The ring contained two separate communication modules.
Samuel’s module sent emergency health data to the clock system.
A hidden Whitlock module transmitted location, sleep cycles, blood pressure, and hormone patterns to Northbridge.
Ethan had delivered the ring for modification.
He claimed ignorance.
Again.
“You gave them access to my body every hour.”
“I believed it improved the battery.”
“You never read anything.”
“I trusted my mother.”
“And I paid for it.”
Ethan lowered his voice.
“I loved you.”
“Past tense?”
“No.”
“Then why does every dangerous decision place her authority above my consent?”
His silence became the only honest answer he had given.
Samuel asked Ethan to leave the room.
Amelia stopped him.
“No. He stays until I finish.”
She removed the wedding ring from her finger.
Ethan stared at it.
“I’m not deciding our marriage today,” she said. “I’m deciding that you no longer make medical decisions for me.”
She placed the ring on the overbed table.
A legal representative entered and revoked every document naming Ethan or Vivian as medical proxy.
Samuel requested that he become temporary proxy.
Amelia declined.
“My attorney will appoint someone independent.”
Samuel looked wounded but nodded.
The first genuinely respectful response from a man who loved her was accepting that love did not create authority.
Ethan moved toward the door.
Before leaving, he turned.
“There is something else.”
Amelia waited.
“Vivian asked me to provide a cheek swab before our fertility treatment.”
“For the embryos?”
“She said the trust required genetic confirmation.”
“Did the clinic take one from me?”
“Not while you were awake.”
Amelia felt cold.
During egg retrieval, she had been under anesthesia.
The clinic could have collected anything.
“What did the trust actually require?”
“Proof that the heir carried Whitlock DNA.”
“Not mine.”
“No.”
A second pregnancy might involve Ethan’s genetic material but not Amelia’s.
Vivian could have lied about the stolen embryo to manipulate both of them.
Independent testing of the Northbridge records was required.
Police examined the alternate-gestation file.
The maternal genetic source was coded CROSS-M1.
Samuel recognized the format.
Claire Cross’s archived tissue samples had been stored after her death for a malpractice investigation.
Those samples disappeared twenty-five years earlier.
The alternate male embryo might contain Ethan’s DNA and Amelia’s dead mother’s genetic material.
Vivian was attempting to produce an heir connected not only to the Whitlocks, but directly to Claire Cross.
Amelia stared at her father.
“Why would she want Mom’s DNA?”
Samuel looked toward Claire’s photograph.
“Because your mother was not only investigating the Whitlock trust.”
“What else was she?”
“The legal heir to Cross Biomedical.”
Amelia had never heard the company name.
Samuel explained that Claire’s family once owned medical patents later absorbed into Whitlock holdings after her death.
A child genetically linked to Claire and Ethan could challenge both fortunes.
The alternate pregnancy was not simply about producing a son.

It was designed to unite two stolen empires inside one baby controlled by Vivian.
👉 Ethan’s silence allowed Vivian to monitor Amelia’s body, while the alternate embryo may have been created from stolen genetic material belonging to Amelia’s dead mother.
