The child advocate had requested that condition because Bianca spent most of her first evaluation studying whether the infant resembled her.
Biology was information.
The relationship would require attention to the baby actually present.
Bianca washed her hands and sat beside the foster nurse.
“May I hold her?”
The nurse looked toward the advocate.
The advocate looked at Bianca.
“You may ask Iris.”
“She’s two months old.”
“She still communicates.”
Bianca extended one finger.
Iris turned toward the movement, then began crying when Bianca leaned closer.
Bianca withdrew.
The foster nurse lifted her.
The first visit ended without contact.
Bianca cried in the elevator.
No one offered a photograph as compensation.
The second visit lasted longer.
By the fourth, Iris allowed Bianca to hold her for eight minutes.
Catherine watched none of them.
She remained in federal detention, arguing that gestation made her Iris’s primary mother. Her lawyers cited the months she carried the child, the medical risks she accepted, and the care she provided after birth.
The court acknowledged every fact.
It also examined the forged procedure, the trust Catherine created for herself, the hidden birth, the use of Iris as leverage, and the refusal to surrender her until armed officers entered.
Gestation did not disappear.
Neither did conduct.
Bianca’s position contained its own contradiction.
She had not consented to egg retrieval or conception.
She had participated in hiding Rose, supporting Sarah’s false psychiatric report, and building the public household intended to absorb a Vale heir.
She was reproductive victim and custody conspirator.
One role did not erase the other.
Alexander attended a separate observation visit.
Iris carried his gray-blue eyes.
The resemblance no longer felt like proof of entitlement. After Rose, Violet, Lily, and Daisy, he had learned that recognizing his face in a child was the beginning of questions, not the answer.
He provided complete medical history.
He funded no private custody team.
He asked for no overnight access.
Bianca noticed.
“You would have demanded her six months ago.”
“Yes.”
“Because she was yours?”
“Because I thought wanting something intensely made delay insulting.”
“Do you want her?”
“Yes.”
“Do you want me?”
“No.”
The answer hurt Bianca.
It also released Iris from becoming a path back to him.
The Sterling Strategic Trust activated after genetic confirmation. Catherine’s documents transferred six hundred million dollars into an account naming her gestational guardian.
Judge Mercer froze it.
Auditors found the money came from mixed sources.
Lawful Sterling investments.
Vale shell charities.
Patient foundations.
Executive pension transfers.
Property taken through family guardianships.
Iris did not simply inherit six hundred million dollars.
She inherited a legal dispute created before birth.
The court separated a personal financial trust for her from the contested assets. The amount would be determined after restitution.
No voting authority would activate during childhood.
Bianca’s supervised visits continued while her criminal case developed.
She asked the foster nurse what Iris liked.
“Movement. Low music. Being held upright after feeding.”
Bianca wrote the information down.
For the first time, her plan for a Vale child concerned reflux rather than voting power.
Catherine sent Bianca a letter.
I carried her when you could not. Do not let Sarah’s lawyers make you ashamed of accepting what I preserved.
Bianca read it once.
Then told her attorney:
“My mother keeps speaking as though Iris was an object transferred between women.”
“What do you want to say?”
“That I am grateful she survived the pregnancy. I am furious she created it.”
Both entered Bianca’s victim statement.
The parentage court postponed final placement until after her plea evaluation. Iris remained with Dana Lewis, the neonatal foster specialist who had cared for her since the raid.
Dana did not describe herself as temporary every time she held the baby. Children did not experience court terminology.
She simply remained consistent.
At the Sterling Trust audit, investigators found an account opened in Iris’s name six months before her conception.
It had made one payment.
Two million dollars to Leonard Pike.
Purpose:
Remove Sarah Mason Vale before primary daughter delivery.
Bianca had not known about the car attack.
