Chapter 8 - The Board Vote at MidnightVale Meridian’s board reconvened at midnight.
Federal agents had not yet charged every executive, but the company faced immediate collapse. News of the hidden heirs had not reached the public. If leaked without explanation, share prices could fall before assets were protected.
Leonard Pike remained under guard.
Three executives resigned.
Two claimed they knew nothing about the family trust.
One produced evidence that Leonard had threatened her son after she questioned payments to St. Helena Hospital.
The conspiracy had been maintained through fear as much as loyalty.
Sarah attended remotely from the penthouse nursery.
Rose slept in one crib.
Violet rested in a portable bassinet beside Rebecca.
Bianca remained in another room with counsel.
Alexander sat in the boardroom at the same head position where he had signed the divorce.
The black pen still lay near the original papers.
He did not touch it.
Martin explained the options.
The board could suspend Alexander based on failure to disclose Rose.
It could appoint an emergency CEO.
Or Rose’s trust representative could block the vote.
Sarah held that temporary authority as Rose’s legal guardian.
Every executive looked toward the screen.
Alexander did too.
Sarah could preserve his position.
Or remove him.
He had spent years assuming she wanted access to the company.
Now the company depended on her decision.
“I will not vote to protect Alexander personally,” she said.
His face remained still.
“I will vote to prevent Leonard’s faction from gaining emergency control.”
Sarah authorized a ninety-day independent stewardship order. Alexander remained CEO in name but lost unilateral authority. Every major decision required approval from an outside monitor.
He had not been removed.
He had not been saved.
He had been limited.
Alexander accepted without argument.
Leonard laughed.
“You gave the company to bureaucrats.”
Sarah answered.
“No. I took it away from men who treat children as voting instruments.”
The vote passed.
Then a motion appeared from an offshore board member.
Recognize Lily Vale as senior biological daughter.
If Lily was born before Rose and Violet, she could supersede their trust claim.
The motion included a birth certificate dated nine months earlier.
Mother: Bianca Sterling.
Father: Alexander Vale.
Bianca entered the boardroom through the private elevator.
She carried no baby.
Her face was white.
“I never gave birth.”
Leonard looked at her.
“You signed the medical authorization.”
“I signed a health examination.”
“Your genetic contribution was preserved.”
Bianca walked toward him.
“You created a child from me?”
Leonard remained calm.
“William did.”
Alexander stood.
Naomi moved between them before violence began.
Bianca’s attorney demanded immediate independent testing and protection for the child.
The birth certificate listed a private maternity residence in New Jersey.
Agents arrived.
The facility had been emptied.
A nurse’s journal described Lily as healthy and transferred at three months old to a “maternal guardian.”
No name.
The baby monitor signal in the penthouse came from a transmitter hidden inside the nursery wall. Its audio was routed through an offshore server.
Someone wanted the adults to hear Lily without finding her.
The board motion had been submitted by the same user.
Martin traced the account.
Helena Vale Foundation.
Alexander stared.
His mother’s foundation had supposedly dissolved after her death.
Evelyn Hart shook her head.
“Helena created a private successor board before William isolated her.”
“Who controls it now?”
Evelyn did not know.
The foundation’s current trustee appeared only as H.V.
Alexander’s mother had been Helena Victoria Vale.
The initials matched.
A live video replaced the board documents.
An elderly woman appeared inside a nursery holding Lily.
Alexander stopped breathing.
The woman looked like Helena Vale twenty years older.
His mother had supposedly died twelve years earlier.
Sarah watched his face collapse again.
“Mother?”
The woman smiled.
“Alexander, you finally learned to read what you sign.”
Every executive froze.
Helena looked toward Sarah through the camera.
“Thank you for bringing Rose into the boardroom.”
Then she looked toward Bianca.
“And thank you for surviving the role my husband assigned you.”
Bianca’s anger changed into confusion.
Helena continued.
“Lily is safe. But she is not Bianca’s daughter.”
The birth certificate was another manufactured claim.
The baby’s true maternal line remained hidden.
Helena had used the third child to lure William’s remaining loyalists into voting publicly.
Every executive who supported Lily’s senior-heir motion had exposed involvement in the secret succession plan.
Federal agents began making arrests around the table.
Leonard shouted toward the screen.
“You built this trap.”
Helena answered.
“I learned from my husband.”
Sarah stepped closer to the monitor.
“Where is Lily?”
“Safe from the board.”
“That is not the same as safe from you.”
Helena’s expression changed.
Sarah had refused gratitude in exchange for another secret guardian.
“I will meet you,” Helena said.
“Bring both twins. Leave Alexander behind.”
The screen went dark.
Alexander stared at Sarah.
His mother was alive.
