Chapter 5 - Two Babies Named RoseSarah refused to let anyone take Rose from her arms.

Federal agents escorted the group back into the boardroom while cyber specialists traced the live feed. The duplicate hospital bracelet filled the central screen.

Alexander stood beside Sarah but did not touch either her or the baby.

“Could the second child be a recording?” he asked.

“The timestamp is verified,” the agent replied. “The feed is live.”

Rebecca Cole looked exhausted but uninjured. The infant in her arms appeared approximately six months old.

Same age as Rose.

Sarah watched carefully.

The second baby had dark hair and lighter eyes. She did not look strongly like Alexander, but appearance meant little at that age.

“Where was Rose born?” Martin asked.

“St. Helena Private Hospital,” Sarah answered.

The facility belonged to the Vale Foundation.

Alexander felt the pattern close around him.

Sarah went into labor four weeks early. Her Connecticut physician transferred her to St. Helena because it possessed the nearest advanced neonatal unit.

She delivered after an emergency procedure.

For six hours, she was unconscious.

When she woke, doctors told her the baby had suffered breathing complications but survived.

She saw Rose the following morning.

“Were you told it was a single birth?” Martin asked.

“Yes.”

Sarah’s face changed before the question finished.

A memory surfaced.

She had heard two cries before anesthesia took hold.

One near her.

One farther away.

She assumed another patient’s child was in the delivery suite.

The hospital records listed one infant.

Evelyn reviewed Helena’s archive.

An old Vale family protocol allowed hospital administrators to create “continuity identification” for babies connected to the trust.

The policy was supposed to protect against kidnapping.

Leonard’s team could have used it to create duplicate records.

“Why create a second Rose?” Alexander asked.

Martin answered.

“If one child remained with Sarah and another stayed under board control, they could challenge whichever identity became inconvenient.”

The board did not need the second baby to be Alexander’s biological daughter.

They needed enough documents to create uncertainty.

A disputed heir could freeze the seventeen-percent voting block for years.

Bianca’s attorney demanded that she be released from the building.

Federal Agent Naomi Brooks refused.

“Sterling Strategic Trust paid the hospital three days before Sarah delivered.”

Bianca stared.

“My father controlled that foundation.”

“He died four years ago,” Alexander said.

Bianca’s face emptied.

She believed the foundation had been dissolved after his death.

It remained active under Leonard Pike’s management.

Her family name was being used just as Alexander’s had been.

Naomi placed Bianca’s old employment file beside the hospital payment.

“You were chosen as custodian because the board believed your family would cooperate.”

Bianca looked toward Leonard.

“You told me the child was being protected from Sarah.”

“You were paid to perform a role,” he said.

“Did you create another baby?”

Leonard remained silent.

The live feed suddenly changed.

Rebecca leaned closer to the camera.

“If Sarah is watching, the child with me is not a replacement.”

The room froze.

“She is your daughter too.”

Sarah stopped breathing.

Rebecca looked down at the infant.

“You delivered twins.”

Alexander gripped the back of a chair.

Sarah pressed Rose closer as though someone might divide her body between two children.

Rebecca continued.

“The board declared the second girl stillborn and removed her before Sarah regained consciousness.”

The second child’s true name was Violet.

Rebecca discovered the altered birth records while investigating Helena’s vault. She took Violet from a board-controlled residence and disappeared to keep the child alive.

“Where are you?” Sarah asked the screen even though Rebecca could not hear her.

The feed transmitted from somewhere in the skyscraper.

Naomi traced the signal vertically.

Forty-fourth floor.

One level above the boardroom.

Alexander stared at the ceiling.

The forty-fourth floor did not exist on public building plans. Vale Meridian listed it as mechanical space.

Security opened a concealed stairway behind the executive lounge.

Sarah refused to remain behind.

She entered with Rose, Alexander, Martin, Evelyn, and federal agents.

The hidden floor contained a nursery, medical suite, and observation room overlooking the boardroom through one-way glass.

Rebecca stood at the far end holding Violet.

Sarah stopped.

The two infants made small sounds almost simultaneously.

Rose turned toward Violet.

Violet turned toward Rose.

Rebecca began crying.

“I tried to reach you.”

Sarah approached slowly.

“May I see her?”

Rebecca nodded.

Sarah touched Violet’s tiny hand.

The child closed her fingers around Sarah’s thumb.

Alexander remained several feet away.

He had learned not to move first.

Martin opened Violet’s protected file.

The board had never completed a paternity test.

They assumed both twins shared the same father.

But the embryo records contained a warning.

Dual conception under review. Paternal source mismatch possible.

Alexander looked at Sarah.

She stared at the page in confusion.

“There was no other man.”

Rebecca answered quietly.

“The hospital used stored reproductive material during your emergency surgery.”

Someone may have altered the conception before birth.

One twin was certainly Alexander’s.

The other might have been created through unauthorized medical intervention.

👉 Sarah discovered she had delivered twins, but Violet’s sealed record warned that the sisters might not share the same biological father.
