Chapter 7 - The Penthouse KeysSarah entered the penthouse for the first time in seven months.

She carried Rose.

Rebecca carried Violet.

Alexander waited near the elevator until Sarah gave permission for him to follow.

The apartment looked almost unchanged.

White marble.

Floor-to-ceiling windows.

The piano Sarah used to play after dinner.

Wedding photographs still lined one hallway because Alexander had never ordered them removed.

Bianca’s belongings occupied the main bedroom.

Sarah noticed a silk robe, perfume bottles, and a framed photograph of Bianca and Alexander on a yacht.

She looked away.

Discovering the conspiracy did not erase the affair.

Alexander saw where her eyes moved.

“I should have removed everything before you came.”

“You should have kept her out before I left.”

“Yes.”

No explanation.

The nursery had been built behind a wall Sarah believed was part of the guest suite.

William’s contractors created it during the first year of the marriage.

Long before Rose and Violet were conceived.

The mural showed two girls holding hands beneath the city skyline.

Rose and Violet.

Their names appeared beneath the painted flowers.

Sarah touched the letters.

“My children were named before I carried them.”

Alexander opened the construction file.

William approved the room two months before his death.

He expected Alexander and Sarah to produce twin daughters.

How could he know?

The fertility archive provided the answer.

Sarah underwent a routine procedure after a miscarriage four years into the marriage. Her doctor told her no embryos were created.

In reality, the clinic retrieved eggs and combined them with Alexander’s stored genetic material.

Two embryos were preserved.

William named them according to Helena’s favorite flowers.

The embryos remained frozen until Sarah’s natural pregnancy years later.

During her emergency delivery, hospital surgeons transferred one embryo into a surrogate.

But Violet was born the same night as Rose.

The timing made that impossible.

Unless the archived dates were altered again.

Rebecca found a hidden cabinet behind the nursery mural.

Inside were two newborn hospital bracelets.

Rose Vale.

Violet Vale.

Both carried the same birth time.

A third bracelet rested beneath them.

Lily Vale.

No corresponding child had been mentioned.

Sarah felt the room narrow.

“How many daughters did they create?”

The nursery files described a three-child continuity structure.

Rose: Public Heir.

Violet: Protected Alternate.

Lily: Deferred Successor.

William intended one daughter to be raised publicly, one secretly, and one only if the first two failed to secure the trust.

The third embryo may still exist.

Or another child may already have been born.

Alexander looked toward the cribs.

His father had planned his family as corporate redundancy.

Sarah found another envelope addressed to Bianca.

It contained a residency agreement granting her use of the penthouse nursery after marriage to Alexander. She would be expected to raise whichever child the board assigned to her.

Bianca entered under supervision after agents called her upstairs.

She read the contract.

“I never saw this.”

“Your signature is on the final page,” Martin said.

Bianca remembered signing employment renewals prepared by Leonard.

Her future had been contracted without her reading it.

The pattern had reached everyone.

Sarah did not feel sympathy strong enough to erase Bianca’s choices.

But she recognized the same trap.

Bianca handed over the duplicate penthouse keys.

“I used these to enter after you left.”

“Did you ever enter the nursery?”

“No. Leonard told me it was a panic room.”

“Did you hear a baby?”

Bianca’s face changed.

“Once.”

The sound came three months before Rose’s birth.

She heard crying behind the wall and assumed it was an audio test.

A child had been in the nursery before Sarah delivered.

The third bracelet might belong to a baby already born.

Alexander searched building access logs.

A private elevator reached the penthouse at 2:14 a.m. three months before Rose’s birth.

Passenger: Dr. Samuel Kline.

The psychiatrist who prepared Sarah’s false mental-health report.

He carried a medical bassinet into the apartment.

He left without it.

The hidden nursery may have housed another infant before Rose and Violet existed publicly.

Security footage had been deleted, but one reflection remained in the elevator’s polished wall.

A nurse carried a newborn wearing a lily-patterned blanket.

Sarah stared.

“If Lily was born before the twins, whose child is she?”

Martin opened the embryo registry.

The maternal source was listed only as Vale Spouse Candidate One.

Sarah was not the first woman William had evaluated as Alexander’s future wife.

Someone else’s genetic material had been used.

Bianca stepped backward.

Her employment file had called her a custodian candidate.

A second sealed page classified her as:

Reproductive Source Reserve.

She had undergone a company medical examination when hired.

The clinic may have taken her eggs without consent.

Lily could be Bianca and Alexander’s biological daughter.

Bianca gripped the crib railing.

“No.”

Sarah looked at her.

For the first time, the two women faced a child-shaped crime that neither could reduce to rivalry.

Then a baby monitor inside the nursery activated.

A little girl cried from an unknown location.

A woman whispered:

May you like

“Lily, your father is finally listening.”

👉 The penthouse records revealed a third daughter may have been created from Bianca and Alexander’s stolen genetic material, and a live baby monitor proved the child was still alive somewhere nearby.
