Chapter 1 - THE FALL FROM VALE HOUSE

Vanessa’s hand rested possessively against Evelyn’s pregnant belly.
Three babies moved beneath the thin fabric of Evelyn’s robe, but Vanessa did not smile with affection. She leaned over the wheelchair, her face filled with cold triumph.
“You were only an incubator,” she whispered. “I’m taking the babies and the house.”
Two packed suitcases stood beside the mansion’s entrance. Vanessa had filled them herself. Evelyn recognized her clothes folded inside one and the triplets’ newborn supplies packed inside the other.
There was no suitcase for Vanessa.
She did not intend to leave.
Evelyn looked at the folder beneath her sister’s arm. Forged parental-rights papers protruded from the leather cover. Her signature appeared at the bottom of every page.
“This is my house,” Evelyn said. “And you forged my signature.”
While Vanessa stared into her face, Evelyn slipped one hand beneath the blanket and pressed the medical alert button attached to her wheelchair.
A silent emergency signal traveled to the private ambulance service monitoring her high-risk pregnancy.
Vanessa did not notice.
Her expression darkened.
“You were supposed to cooperate.”
“I carried these babies for eight months. I nearly died twice. You don’t own them because you paid a clinic.”
“They were never yours.”
Evelyn thought of the sealed DNA report hidden inside her robe.
She had believed the same lie for most of the pregnancy.
Vanessa moved behind the wheelchair and released the brake.
The front doors of Vale House stood open to the wide stone steps. Rain swept across the landing and turned the driveway silver beneath the afternoon sky.
Evelyn gripped the armrests.
“What are you doing?”
“No one will believe a sick woman.”
Vanessa shoved.
The wheelchair rolled over the threshold. Its front wheels struck the first step and twisted sideways.
Evelyn protected her belly with both arms as the chair overturned. She struck the landing hard enough to lose her breath. Pain spread through her hips and lower abdomen.
Her palm scraped across the wet stone, leaving a small streak of blood.
She heard Vanessa descend slowly behind her.
“Oh my God,” Vanessa cried loudly. “Evelyn fell!”
The performance had already begun.
An ambulance siren rose beyond the estate gates.
Vanessa’s face changed.
She had not called anyone.
Paramedics rushed through the rain. Aaron Blake reached Evelyn first and knelt beside her without moving her.
“Ma’am, can you hear me?”
“My babies.”
“We’re checking them now.”
Another responder placed monitors against Evelyn’s abdomen. Three rapid heartbeats sounded through the portable equipment.
Alive.
Evelyn began crying.
Vanessa stood above the responders, pretending to tremble.
“She lost control of the chair. I tried to stop her.”
Evelyn reached inside her robe and removed the sealed envelope.
“Take this DNA report,” she told Aaron. “She can never claim my babies.”
Aaron accepted it carefully. The envelope carried the seal of an independent prenatal genetics laboratory.
He opened it only after Evelyn gave permission.
His eyes moved across the results.
His expression sharpened.
Vanessa saw the change and lunged toward him.
“What does it say?”
A second paramedic blocked her.
Aaron placed the report inside an evidence bag.
Vanessa stared directly at Evelyn, panic replacing arrogance.
“Then whose babies are they?”
Evelyn rested one protective hand over her stomach.
For the first time that day, she smiled.
Not because she was safe.
May you like
Because Vanessa was finally afraid.
👉 The DNA report proved Vanessa had no biological claim to the triplets—but it also contained a second result no one at the mansion expected.
