Chapter 13 - VANESSA’S LAST BARGAIN
Vanessa asked to speak with Evelyn.
Sarah advised against it, but Evelyn agreed to a recorded video call from the hospital. She wanted no private promises and no unrecorded apology.
Vanessa appeared on-screen from the county detention center.
For several seconds, neither sister spoke.
Then Vanessa said, “Celeste has the real embryo.”
“She surrendered a substitute.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Then Grant moved it.”
“Grant says Victor had it.”
“They are all lying.”
“So are you.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“I can find it.”
“What do you want?”
“A reduced statement from you at sentencing.”
“You pushed me down the steps.”
“I was terrified.”
“You were losing control.”
“I was losing everything.”
Evelyn looked toward the neonatal unit.
“No. You were losing things that belonged to other people.”
Vanessa’s mouth tightened.
“You always got the house, the husband, Mother’s love.”
“Ryan died.”
“And somehow even his death gave you more.”
The sentence revealed that Vanessa’s resentment had survived every tragedy because she interpreted Evelyn’s pain as attention.
Evelyn no longer felt the need to correct her.
“Where is the embryo?”
Vanessa said Grant kept a private storage account under a false company called North Star Continuity. He used it for evidence and assets he wanted beyond Victor’s reach.
The company rented laboratory space at a veterinary genetics facility outside Dallas.
Federal agents searched the site.
They found the R-19 container and one embryo storage vial.
Testing confirmed the embryo belonged genetically to Evelyn and Ryan.
The fourth embryo was finally secured.
Grant’s private records revealed his endgame.
If Vanessa gained custody, he would manage the triplets’ trusts.
If Vanessa failed, he intended to approach Evelyn as the attorney who could recover the missing embryo.
Either outcome placed him near Ryan’s company shares.
Grant had never chosen a side.
He built profit into every result.
The district attorney presented indictments against Vanessa, Grant, Dr. Lane, Victor, Melissa, and Celeste.
Vanessa faced attempted murder, aggravated assault, reproductive fraud, conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, and financial crimes.
Grant faced many of the same conspiracy charges.
Dr. Lane’s medical license was suspended immediately.
Victor’s development company collapsed after investors withdrew.
Vale House remained under Evelyn’s control.
The immediate battle had been won.
At the hospital, Rose and Lily began breathing without assistance. Ryan remained smaller but stable.
Evelyn held all three for the first time with nurses supporting their bodies across her chest.
Fear gave way to grief for everything stolen from the pregnancy—and gratitude for everything that remained.
Aaron stood near the door.
“You look different,” he said.
“How?”
“Like no one will ever move your chair without permission again.”
Evelyn smiled faintly.
“I may burn the chair.”
“Wait until you can walk safely.”
“Then I’ll burn it.”
A nurse laughed softly.
The moment felt almost ordinary.
Then Sarah entered carrying Celeste’s completed DNA result.
Celeste was not Evelyn’s half-sister.
She shared no close biological connection to the Vale family.
Her entire inheritance story was false.
Dana confronted her.
Celeste showed no surprise.
“I needed Vanessa to believe I belonged.”
“Who told you enough family history to make the lie convincing?”
Celeste looked toward the observation camera.
“Margaret’s attorney.”
Grant Mercer.
Even Celeste’s personal claim had been another tool he created.
But she added one final detail.
Grant was not the person who first contacted her.
A man who knew Ryan’s sample code had recruited her before Ryan died.
Celeste never learned his real name.
She knew only the phrase he used:

The children must be born before the fifth year closes.
