Chapter 8 - THE WRONG NAME ON THREE BRACELETS

The hospital halted registration immediately.

Technology staff disconnected the maternity database from outside networks. The false forms had entered through a legal-document upload linked to Grant Mercer’s office.

Grant claimed the upload was automatic.

The file’s creation time proved otherwise.

It had been prepared the previous evening, after his first police interview.

Someone at his office still had access.

The surgical team could not delay delivery while detectives investigated.

Dr. Pierce leaned over Evelyn before anesthesia began.

“We will identify each baby with handwritten bands in the operating room. You will see them before they leave.”

“Promise me.”

“I promise.”

The first baby arrived crying.

A girl.

Small, furious, and alive.

The second was another girl who needed breathing support but responded quickly.

The third was a boy.

He remained silent for several terrible seconds before the neonatal team stabilized him.

Evelyn heard a weak cry.

Three babies.

Two daughters and a son.

All alive.

Dr. Pierce held each close enough for her to see before the infants entered their separate incubators.

Aaron stood near the exit and checked every handwritten band against Evelyn’s identity.

No one removed a baby without two verified staff members.

The precautions worked.

But Evelyn began bleeding heavily after delivery.

The room filled with urgent commands. Medication entered her line while Dr. Pierce controlled the complication.

Her vision narrowed.

The last thing she saw was Aaron pushing the incubators toward the secured neonatal unit.

When Evelyn woke hours later, Sarah sat beside her.

“The babies are stable.”

“All three?”

“All three.”

Evelyn began crying.

Sarah gave her time before explaining the hospital breach.

A temporary administrative employee had inserted Vanessa’s information into the registration system using a forged court order.

The employee, Melissa Grant, was Grant Mercer’s niece.

She disappeared during the surgery.

Security footage showed her leaving through the loading entrance carrying a document case.

Police later found the case inside her abandoned vehicle.

It contained copies of the original DNA report, newborn transfer orders, and one sealed legal petition.

The petition claimed the triplets’ biological father had never consented to their conception.

If filed, it could freeze custody while the court identified him.

“Ryan consented to creating children with me,” Evelyn said.

“Did his storage agreement specifically authorize posthumous use?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have the original?”

“Vanessa handled the records after he died.”

The document was missing.

Grant had created one final legal uncertainty.

If Ryan’s authorization could not be proven, the triplets’ custody might become entangled in years of litigation involving his estate.

Sarah believed the argument would fail, but Grant did not need to win immediately.

He needed delay and confusion.

Melissa Grant remained missing.

Her phone last connected near the development company that planned to buy Vale House.

The company’s president denied involvement.

Investigators found another connection.

The developer had paid the medical transport agency that attempted to reach Evelyn’s hospital room.

The mansion sale was not a future possibility.

Investors had already financed the operation to obtain it.

Vanessa supplied access.

Grant supplied documents.

Dr. Lane supplied the pregnancy.

The developer supplied money.

Evelyn’s survival threatened all of them.

Aaron entered carrying three Polaroid photographs taken after the delivery. Each infant wore a handwritten band showing Evelyn’s name.

“No electronic system can change these,” he said.

She held the photographs against her chest.

“What happens if they challenge Ryan’s consent?”

“Then you answer with evidence.”

“What if the evidence is gone?”

Aaron looked toward the secured nursery.

“You have three living reasons not to stop looking.”

👉 The triplets were safe for the moment, but the only document proving Ryan authorized their conception had vanished from the family archive.
