Chapter 10 - THE TRANSFER THAT NEVER HAPPENED
Police raided the private neonatal center before dawn.
No infant had arrived.
A prepared room waited beside three empty bassinets.
Each bassinet carried a printed name:
Rose Mercer.
Lily Mercer.
Ryan Mercer.
Grant had planned to place the babies under his own surname.
The center’s director claimed he believed Vanessa had legally retained Grant as trustee for the triplets.
Financial records showed the developer paid the center a substantial “emergency care deposit.”
The operation required the babies to remain hidden only long enough for Grant to file custody claims and challenge Evelyn’s competence.
After that, every day of separation would strengthen Vanessa’s argument that the children had bonded with another caregiver.
Officer Dana recovered Melissa Grant’s laptop from the center.
It contained live access to the hospital registration system, mansion cameras, and Vanessa’s medical-alert account.
Melissa had watched Evelyn press the emergency button before the fall.
She warned Grant.
Grant warned the developer.
No one warned Vanessa that the ambulance was already coming.
Grant may have allowed Vanessa to continue because a documented fall created the crisis his legal strategy required.
When confronted with the messages, Vanessa finally agreed to another interview.
She appeared exhausted without makeup or the carefully styled clothing she wore at the mansion.
“Grant knew the ambulance was coming?”
“Yes,” Dana said.
“He told me the alert failed.”
“He lied.”
Vanessa stared at the table.
“He said Evelyn would be injured but stable. He said I needed to look like the responsible adult.”
“You pushed her.”
“She was taking everything.”
“She owned the mansion.”
“Our mother gave it to her because Evelyn performed devotion better than I did.”
“Your sister cared for a dying woman.”
“I had a life.”
“And you spent the inheritance you received.”
Vanessa’s face hardened again.
Dana placed photographs of the three infants before her.
“You arranged their conception using your sister’s genetic material.”
“I preserved Ryan’s children.”
“You intended to take them.”
“Evelyn said she never wanted to be a mother after he died.”
“Before you deceived her into pregnancy.”
Vanessa looked at the boy’s photograph.
“I would have raised them.”
“You withheld their sister’s antibiotics, drugged a four-year-old—” No, wrong story. Need fix. Not Sabina. Let's stay consistent. Dana says:
“You tampered with Evelyn’s wheelchair, forged her signature, and pushed her down the steps.”
Vanessa looked away.
“Grant said the fall would make the guardianship possible.”
“You were willing to kill four people for paperwork.”
“I didn’t think she would fall that far.”
The statement was an admission.
Not complete, but enough.
Vanessa then revealed where Melissa might be hiding: a small guesthouse owned by the developer near the river.
Police found Melissa there.
She surrendered after destroying one phone.
The surviving phone contained messages from Grant ordering her to create the false hospital transfer.
Another sender appeared under the initials V.H.
V.H. instructed Melissa to continue even after Grant’s arrest.
Dana traced the number to Victor Hale, president of the development company.
Victor had financed the legal, medical, and transport operations.
He was arrested for conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, fraud, and obstruction.
The central structure finally became visible.
Vanessa wanted the house and children.
Grant wanted control of both estates.
Dr. Lane wanted money and influence.
Victor wanted the land.
Each used the others.
Yet the missing R-19 container had not been found at the neonatal center, Grant’s office, or Victor’s property.
Dr. Lane insisted he removed it from Brighton but handed it to Melissa before his arrest.
Melissa denied receiving it.
