Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO WROTE THE PAPERS
Grant Mercer had represented the Vale family for sixteen years.
He drafted Margaret’s will, handled Ryan’s estate, and reviewed the deed to Vale House. No one understood the intersecting assets better.
That made his involvement deliberate.
Police searched his office and recovered earlier versions of the parental-rights agreement.
The first draft honestly described Evelyn and Ryan as the biological parents.
Vanessa’s name appeared only as proposed guardian.
A later draft removed Ryan.
The final version removed Evelyn too.
Each revision gave Vanessa more authority.
Grant claimed the changes reflected his client’s instructions.
“Which client?” Dana asked.
He could not answer without implicating himself.
Financial records showed Vanessa paid him from a loan secured against the future sale of Vale House. She had already promised the mansion to a development company once she obtained control.
The company intended to demolish the historic property and build luxury residences.
Vanessa’s debts exceeded seven million dollars.
She needed the sale.
Ryan’s company shares offered an additional escape.
The triplets were not children to her.
They were a bridge between two fortunes.
Evelyn reviewed the files with Sarah from her hospital bed.
One memorandum described three necessary events:
Establish Vanessa as intended mother.
Establish Evelyn as medically incapable.
Secure immediate physical custody at delivery.
The document used clinical language, but its purpose was unmistakable.
“Did Grant know about the plan to push me?” Evelyn asked.
“There is no written instruction.”
“There wouldn’t be.”
A recovered voicemail provided more.
Vanessa had called Grant the morning of the fall.
“She has the DNA report,” Vanessa said.
Grant answered, “Then the incapacity petition must be filed before she reaches an independent hospital.”
“She won’t sign.”
“Physical condition may make consent unnecessary.”
“What does that mean?”
“You told me she is at risk of premature labor.”
Vanessa became quiet.
Grant added:
“If a medical crisis occurs at the house, you become the only stable adult available.”
He had not explicitly ordered the shove.
He had explained how a crisis would benefit her.
Vanessa acted within minutes.
Prosecutors charged Grant with fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and facilitation of medical kidnapping. Further charges remained under review.
At the mansion, investigators found a hidden recorder beneath Vanessa’s desk. She had recorded Grant because she did not trust him.
One conversation revealed that Grant expected a private percentage of the mansion sale and Ryan’s company shares.
Another revealed conflict between them.
Vanessa said:
“The babies belong to me after delivery.”
Grant replied:
“They belong to whoever controls the legal narrative first.”
“You promised me custody.”
“I promised you an opportunity.”
Vanessa had believed Grant served her.
Grant intended to control the assets through a children’s trust even if Vanessa became expendable.
Their conspiracy had begun collapsing before the fall.
Evelyn felt no satisfaction.
Greed had placed three unborn children in danger because every conspirator believed they could betray the others later.
That evening, the third heart-rate line dropped again.
Dr. Pierce entered with the surgical team.
“We cannot wait any longer.”
Evelyn gripped Sarah’s hand.
“Vanessa cannot come near them.”
“She is in custody.”
“Grant’s people tried.”
“The delivery floor is locked.”
Evelyn was moved toward the operating room as three incubators waited beyond the doors.
In the hallway, Aaron stood with the neonatal transport team.
“I’ll remain until all three babies are identified and secured,” he said.
Evelyn nodded.
Then the hospital system printed three newborn-registration forms automatically.
