Chapter 11 - THE FOURTH EMBRYO
Brighton’s paper ledger listed four embryos.
Only three had been transferred to Evelyn.
The fourth remained unaccounted for.
Dr. Lane originally claimed it failed development. His private notes told another story.
Embryo R19-E7-4 was viable and frozen separately.
Someone removed it from Brighton three months before Evelyn’s fall.
The release authorization carried Vanessa’s signature.
Vanessa denied taking it.
“I wanted three babies, not four.”
Dana studied her.
“You speak as though you ordered a number from a catalog.”
Vanessa flinched.
She claimed Grant insisted the fourth embryo remain in storage as insurance. If Evelyn lost the pregnancy, they could try again with another surrogate.
Grant denied this.
Melissa’s recovered messages contained one reference:
Reserve heir secured.
The message came from Victor Hale.
The developer had taken control of the fourth embryo.
Why would a property investor want it?
Sarah found the answer inside Ryan’s company trust.
Any biological child conceived from Ryan’s preserved material could become a beneficiary. The first three children would divide the shares, but a later child could reopen the distribution.
Victor did not need to raise the embryo.
He needed the threat of another heir.
By controlling it, he could pressure Evelyn into selling Ryan’s company shares or settling the mansion dispute.
The embryo had become financial leverage.
Evelyn felt sick.
“They keep describing my children as positions in a trust.”
Sarah nodded.
“We’ll ask the court to take control of every remaining sample and embryo.”
“What happens to the fourth?”
“That decision should belong to you.”
Evelyn looked through the neonatal glass at Rose, Lily, and Ryan.
She had not consented to their creation, yet she loved them with an intensity that made breathing difficult.
The fourth embryo carried the same biological possibility.
But deciding its future under threat felt impossible.
“Secure it first,” she said. “I won’t decide while someone is using it against me.”
Federal agents searched Victor’s corporate laboratory storage site.
The designated container was gone.
Surveillance showed a woman entering with Melissa’s credentials two days before the fall. She removed a small cryogenic case and left in a black vehicle.
Her face remained hidden.
Melissa denied being the woman. Her height and gait differed from the figure.
Vanessa watched the clip during questioning and went pale.
“I know her.”
“Who?”
“Celeste Ward.”
Celeste had worked as Margaret’s private nurse during the final year of her life. After Margaret died, she became Vanessa’s personal assistant for several months, then disappeared.
Celeste knew the mansion, the family trusts, Ryan’s illness, and Evelyn’s grief.
She also witnessed Margaret’s will.
“What did she want?” Dana asked.
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
“She said Margaret stole Vale House from the person who deserved it.”
“Who?”
“Celeste claimed she was our father’s daughter.”
Evelyn and Vanessa’s father had died when they were teenagers.
No recognized third child appeared in the estate records.
Vanessa admitted that Celeste used the claim to gain her trust. She encouraged Vanessa’s belief that Evelyn had unfairly received the mansion and introduced her to Victor Hale.
“Did you verify anything she told you?”
“No.”
“You built a kidnapping plan with a stranger claiming to be your sister?”
“I believed her because she hated Evelyn.”
The honesty was ugly.
Celeste had not pushed the wheelchair or forged the clinic papers.
She had created the resentment that connected Vanessa to Victor.
