Chapter 12 - CELESTE’S CLAIM
Celeste Ward contacted Evelyn through the hospital’s public information line.
She did not demand money.
She requested a private meeting.
Dana refused.
Celeste then sent a recording.
She stood inside an unknown room wearing medical gloves. A cryogenic container rested on a table behind her.
“I have protected what Vanessa and Grant intended to sell,” she said.
Evelyn watched from the hospital room with Sarah and Dana.
Celeste continued.
“Margaret knew who I was. She promised to correct the will and never did.”
Sarah paused the video.
“Do you know anything about this?”
Evelyn shook her head.
Their father, Charles Vale, had traveled constantly during his marriage. A third daughter was possible, but Celeste’s claim remained unsupported.
Celeste held up a sealed envelope.
“This contains my DNA comparison to Evelyn and Vanessa. Open Margaret’s original medical archive, and you will find the same result.”
She proposed an exchange.
The fourth embryo for recognition as a Vale heir.
Not ownership of the mansion, she said.
Only a lawful share of the family estate.
Dana did not trust the distinction.
Celeste had spent months manipulating Vanessa, helping Victor gain access, and monitoring the fertility scheme.
“Why didn’t she expose them?” Evelyn asked.
“Because the plan weakened your ownership,” Sarah said. “She may have intended to claim part of what remained.”
Celeste selected the mansion’s abandoned conservatory as the meeting place. Police prepared a controlled exchange without Evelyn present.
Celeste arrived alone carrying the cryogenic case.
Inside was a storage vial.
Laboratory specialists confirmed it contained an embryo, but identity testing would require careful handling.
Celeste surrendered the case only after Dana displayed a court order preserving her inheritance claim without recognizing its validity.
“You will get a hearing,” Dana said. “Nothing more.”
Celeste smiled.
“A hearing is more than Margaret ever gave me.”
She was arrested for conspiracy, theft of genetic material, and attempted extortion.
During questioning, she denied helping Vanessa plan the fall.
“I wanted Evelyn frightened, not dead.”
“You helped people isolate her.”
“I gave Vanessa information.”
“You directed her to Victor.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Dr. Lane created the embryos without consent.”
“Not until after the transfer.”
“And you stayed silent.”
“I needed proof.”
Every participant believed a future purpose justified present harm.
Celeste provided the final missing link.
Victor Hale did not learn about Vale House through Vanessa.
Grant Mercer introduced him years earlier after Margaret rejected a development offer.
Grant then used Celeste to inflame Vanessa’s resentment while appearing neutral.
Celeste used Vanessa to pursue her own family claim.
Vanessa used Evelyn’s body.
The conspiracy was not one perfect plan.
It was several selfish plans overlapping around the same vulnerable person.
That made it more believable—and more dangerous.
Independent testing of Celeste’s DNA began.
The result would determine whether she had any biological relationship to Evelyn.
The embryo was transferred to a court-supervised medical facility.
Evelyn became the sole person authorized to make future decisions once the criminal case ended.
For the first time, every known genetic sample was secure.
Then the laboratory called Dana privately.
The embryo inside the container did not match Evelyn.
It did not match Ryan.
It was unrelated to the Vale family.
