Chapter 2 - THREE HEARTBEATS IN THE AMBULANCE

Aaron rode beside Evelyn while the ambulance sped toward County General Hospital.

The triplets’ heart rates remained visible on three separate monitor lines. Two were steady. The third repeatedly slowed before recovering.

Evelyn watched that line without blinking.

“Which baby is that?”

“The lowest one,” Aaron said. “We’re giving you oxygen and keeping you tilted to protect blood flow.”

“Are they going to survive?”

“I won’t make promises I can’t keep. But all three are alive.”

He spoke calmly, yet Evelyn noticed how often he checked the third line.

Her scraped palm had already been cleaned and covered. The more serious danger was hidden inside her body.

Aaron held up the evidence bag containing the DNA report.

“Police will need to ask about this.”

“Call them.”

“Do you understand what the report says?”

“It says the triplets are mine.”

“It says more than that.”

Evelyn turned toward him.

Before he could explain, another contraction tightened across her abdomen. She gripped the stretcher rail and fought to breathe through it.

Aaron adjusted the monitor.

“Stay with me. Slow breaths.”

At the hospital, a maternal-fetal medicine team rushed Evelyn through secured doors. Aaron remained in the hallway and handed the sealed report to Officer Dana Cole, who had responded to the medical-alert call.

Vanessa arrived several minutes later in a black sedan.

She entered the emergency department carrying the forged parental-rights folder.

“I am the babies’ legal mother,” she announced. “My sister is a gestational carrier experiencing a psychiatric crisis.”

Dana did not accept the folder.

“Your sister says you pushed her down the steps.”

“She is heavily medicated.”

“She made that statement before receiving medication.”

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the evidence bag.

“That report is private.”

“It was voluntarily provided by the patient.”

“You don’t understand the arrangement.”

“Then explain it.”

Vanessa said she had paid for donor embryos through the Brighton Fertility Center. Evelyn had agreed to carry them because Vanessa could not sustain a pregnancy.

According to Vanessa, the mansion belonged to a family trust that would eventually pass to the triplets as her children.

Dana looked through the glass toward the treatment room.

“Your sister says the mansion belongs to her.”

“She is allowed to live there.”

“County property records list Evelyn Vale as the sole owner.”

Vanessa’s confidence slipped for half a second.

Inside the examination room, Dr. Nathan Pierce studied the ultrasound while Evelyn held the sides of the bed.

One placenta showed early separation.

“We may need to deliver tonight,” he said.

“I’m only thirty-three weeks.”

“Waiting could become more dangerous.”

Evelyn looked toward the door.

“Keep Vanessa away from them.”

“Hospital security has already restricted access.”

Dr. Pierce asked whether the triplets had been conceived through assisted reproduction.

Evelyn told him what she had been told.

Vanessa claimed the embryos came from her own eggs and an anonymous donor. Evelyn agreed to become a gestational carrier after Vanessa promised the pregnancy would save their relationship.

The clinic handled every appointment through Vanessa.

Evelyn never saw the original laboratory records.

Two weeks earlier, she found an invoice naming her as both gestational carrier and genetic patient.

That contradiction led her to order independent testing.

Dr. Pierce opened the copied results now entered into her medical file.

The triplets were genetically related to one another.

All three had the same biological mother.

Evelyn.

Vanessa was excluded.

The paternal section did not identify a name, but it excluded the donor profile Vanessa claimed had been used.

Someone had lied about both sides of the embryos’ origins.

“Could the test be wrong?” Evelyn asked.

“The probability of maternity is greater than 99.99 percent.”

“And the father?”

“The report compares him to a coded reference sample.”

“What code?”

Dr. Pierce turned the screen toward her.

PATERNAL SAMPLE R-19.

Evelyn had seen that code before.

It appeared on an old storage invoice belonging to her late husband, Ryan.
