Chapter 1 - THE CALL FROM VANDERBILTOliver Cole looked impossibly small beneath the white hospital blanket.

One eye was swollen shut. Three cuts crossed his cheek, and purple bruising climbed from the collar of his gown toward his jaw. An IV line disappeared beneath tape wrapped around his thin wrist.

His father knelt beside the bed, holding the boy’s trembling hand.

“Dad… Grandpa said you weren’t coming.”

Ethan Cole’s face collapsed.

For one terrible second, he looked like a man whose bones had stopped holding him upright. Then he leaned closer and gently cupped Oliver’s bruised fingers.

“I’m here, buddy. I’ve got you.”

Nurse Megan Price stood near the heart monitor, struggling to hide her horror. She had treated injured children before, but something about Oliver’s silence frightened her more than screaming would have.

Dr. Claire Lawson entered carrying the preliminary examination report.

“Mr. Cole, I need to ask Oliver several questions without leading him.”

Ethan nodded, though he did not release his son’s hand.

Lawson lowered herself beside the bed.

“Oliver, do you remember how you were hurt?”

The boy’s breathing grew uneven.

The monitor accelerated.

“I tried to run.”

Ethan’s head lifted.

“From whom?”

Oliver turned toward the wall.

Lawson gently stopped Ethan from pressing further.

“He needs time.”

Time was the one thing Ethan no longer trusted.

Oliver had been staying with Richard Cole—Ethan’s estranged father—after a school employee received a signed message claiming Ethan had been injured in a work accident. Richard collected the boy shortly before noon.

Ethan had sent no message.

By evening, Oliver was missing.

At 3:17 the following morning, a delivery driver found him unconscious behind an abandoned grocery store fifteen miles outside Nashville.

Richard’s house stood empty.

His truck was gone.

Oliver’s mother, Rebecca, could not be reached.

Lawson handed Ethan a report.

Oliver had two fractured ribs, a dislocated finger, and bruises of different ages. The newest injuries were only hours old.

The oldest were nearly three days old.

Someone had held him longer than Ethan realized.

“I need security outside this room,” Lawson said. “No visitors without my approval.”

Ethan stared at his child through the glass after the doctor returned to the bedside.

His clenched fist began shaking.

Then he walked into the fluorescent corridor.

He removed a smartphone from the inside pocket of his dark suit and opened a hidden encrypted directory. Only one contact appeared.

No name.

No photograph.

Just a black circle.

The number had not been used in six years.

Ethan had promised Rebecca he would never call it again. He had promised himself the men and women connected to it no longer existed.

He pressed the call button.

Someone answered before the first ring finished.

Ethan looked through the window at Oliver.

“I need a team.”

A distorted voice replied instantly.

“Who’s the target?”

Ethan watched his son curl beneath the blanket.

“Richard Cole.”

The line remained silent for two seconds.

Then the voice said:

“Your father was declared dead forty-one minutes ago.”

Ethan’s blood turned cold.

“By whom?”

“The same person who signed Oliver out of school.”

The call disconnected.

Nurse Megan hurried into the corridor carrying Oliver’s gray hoodie inside an evidence bag.

“I found this sewn into the sleeve.”

She held up a small black transmitter.

Its green light was blinking.
