Chapter 9 - THE KEEPER REJECTS THE SEAEthan reached Vanderbilt with Mara and Rebecca as the countdown entered its final thirty seconds.

Police filled the lobby, but no one knew which orders were authentic. Ethan ignored them and ran toward the pediatric corridor.

Lawson had moved Oliver and Noah into the same room.

The boys sat beside one another, pale and shaking, their hands locked together.

The monitors displayed:

SELECT SUCCESSOR

Oliver looked at Ethan.

“Dad, don’t pick.”

“I won’t.”

Noah watched him differently.

He had known Ethan’s face from photographs and training videos. He had been taught that this man abandoned him willingly.

“Silas said you knew about me.”

“He lied.”

“Mara knew.”

Ethan looked toward her.

“She knew my samples were taken. She didn’t know you existed.”

“That’s not better.”

“No.”

Ethan refused to purchase Noah’s trust with a cleaner story.

Mara inserted her command ring into the isolated receiver. Lawson connected both transmitters through a shielded diagnostic cable without attaching them to the hospital network.

Ethan placed one hand over Oliver’s.

The other over Noah’s.

“The keeper rejects the sea.”

The countdown stopped at three seconds.

For one breathless moment, nothing happened.

Then the screen changed.

PRIMARY HOME IDENTITY REQUIRED

A scanner opened beside the receiver.

Ethan pressed his thumb against it.

Access denied.

He tried again.

Denied.

Grant appeared on the monitor from an unknown location.

“Still pretending you know who you are?”

Mara checked Ethan’s personnel file.

His biometric profile had been replaced.

Someone else now held the Home Zero identity.

Rebecca searched the command logs.

A current authorization had been entered at 12:47 a.m.—the same minute Oliver was found.

The fingerprint belonged to Richard Cole.

Ethan’s father had taken control of Homecoming shortly before his supposed death.

Richard may have kidnapped Oliver to open the archive.

He may also have overwritten Ethan’s identity to prevent Grant from using him.

“Can Richard stop the selection remotely?” Lawson asked.

“If he’s alive,” Mara said.

Ethan called his father’s number.

Someone answered.

Richard’s breathing was weak.

“Dad?”

“I’m here.”

“Give me the Home identity.”

“Grant has Rebecca?”

“She escaped.”

“And Oliver?”

“Beside me.”

Richard exhaled.

“Then I did one thing correctly.”

“One thing doesn’t erase the rest.”

“I know.”

Richard transmitted the biometric release.

The receiver accepted Ethan.

Homecoming began deleting its successor command.

Noah’s monitor cleared first.

Oliver’s remained active.

A new instruction appeared:

KEY ONE CONTAINS UNRECOVERED MEMORY

Lawson examined Oliver.

“What memory?”

Grant’s microelectrodes had not only measured his responses. They delivered patterned stimulation designed to implant an auditory sequence beneath conscious recall.

The archive needed Oliver to repeat something he did not know he knew.

Grant’s voice played through the monitor.

A series of seven tones sounded.

Oliver began speaking automatically.

Coordinates.

Names.

Access codes.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

“He put the remaining archive inside our son.”

Ethan pulled the cable.

Oliver continued reciting.

Noah grabbed his shoulders.

“Listen to me. You’re in Nashville. You’re eight. Your dad is here.”

Oliver’s voice broke.

The sequence stopped.

Then Noah began reciting the next line.

Grant had divided the archive between both children.

Lawson sedated neither boy. She coached them through breathing while Ethan recorded the unwanted data under police supervision.

One final coordinate emerged.

It pointed to an office inside Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Megan recognized the room number.

Dr. Lawson’s office.

Everyone turned toward her.

Lawson looked genuinely shocked.

“That office was assigned to me two years ago.”

Mara checked the building records.

The assignment had been approved by a physician named Silas Grant.
