Chapter 2 - THE TEAM ETHAN BURIEDMara Quinn arrived at Vanderbilt Medical Center twenty-three minutes later.

She wore a charcoal coat over black tactical clothing, her auburn hair pulled tightly behind her head. Two men followed her through the lobby without speaking.

Ethan recognized both.

Jonah Pike had once opened locked rooms for the federal government.

Cal Mercer had once entered them first.

Six years had changed their faces, but not the way they surveyed exits before approaching anyone.

Mara stopped several feet from Ethan.

“You look terrible.”

“My son looks worse.”

Her eyes shifted toward Oliver’s room.

“Is the transmitter still active?”

“Hospital security isolated it.”

“Then whoever planted it knows where he was taken.”

Ethan lowered his voice.

“You told me Richard was dead.”

“His death certificate entered the Tennessee system tonight. Cardiac arrest at a private residence outside Franklin.”

“That isn’t where he lives.”

“No.”

“Who certified it?”

Mara handed him her phone.

The physician’s name was Dr. Caleb Sloane, a retired medical examiner who had died eighteen months earlier.

Someone had used a dead doctor to certify a living man’s death.

Again.

Six years earlier, Ethan had led a small intelligence-recovery unit known unofficially as Rook Team. They located kidnapped witnesses, extracted endangered informants, and recovered evidence from places where official agencies could not openly operate.

Mara coordinated missions.

Jonah handled surveillance.

Cal handled entry.

Richard Cole had been their civilian intelligence source.

He was also the reason Ethan left.

During their final operation, Richard supplied the address of a man selling military secrets. Rook Team entered the property and discovered the supposed traitor was a federal whistleblower preparing to expose Richard’s network.

The building burned before the evidence could be recovered.

One teammate died.

Richard vanished.

Ethan resigned, destroyed every active contact, and built a quiet life in Tennessee.

He never told Oliver what he had once done.

He never imagined Richard would use the child to reopen it.

Dr. Lawson approached with an updated toxicology report.

“Oliver was given a sedative called midazolam. The amount was not fatal, but it was repeated over several days.”

“Could it have been administered without leaving a mark?” Mara asked.

Lawson studied her.

“Who are you?”

“Family security.”

“No, you’re not.”

Ethan stepped between them.

“She is helping locate Oliver’s grandfather.”

Lawson did not look convinced.

“The child also has punctures behind his left ear. They are too small for ordinary injections.”

Megan joined them carrying magnified photographs.

Tiny crescent marks formed a pattern beneath Oliver’s hairline.

Mara’s expression changed.

Ethan noticed.

“You’ve seen them.”

“Old interrogation equipment,” she said. “Microelectrodes. They measure stress responses while someone asks questions.”

Ethan’s stomach tightened.

“What questions?”

“We need Oliver to tell us.”

Lawson shook her head.

“You are not interrogating an injured eight-year-old.”

“No one is,” Ethan said.

Mara looked toward him.

“Then we find the room first.”

The team traced the transmitter’s activation history. It first came online inside a rural property west of Nashville owned by a trust called Cedar Ridge Holdings.

Ethan recognized the address.

It belonged to a hunting cabin Richard claimed to have sold decades earlier.

Jonah and Cal prepared to leave.

Mara remained beside Ethan.

“The number you called wasn’t supposed to work.”

“What does that mean?”

“I deactivated it when the team dissolved.”

“Someone answered.”

“I know.”

“You answered.”

Mara’s voice lowered.

“I answered because the call was forwarded to me.”

“Forwarded from where?”

She showed him the routing trace.

The signal had passed through Richard’s cabin before reaching her.

His father had known Ethan would call the hidden number.

Worse, Richard had positioned himself between Ethan and the team before Oliver was ever taken.

👉 The kidnapping was designed to reactivate Ethan’s old unit—and Richard had been waiting for the exact call his son swore never to make.
