Chapter 4 - THE ROOM BENEATH THE CABINJonah and Cal entered Richard’s cabin before the county tactical unit arrived.

Mara monitored their body cameras from a secured hospital conference room while Ethan remained close to Oliver.

The main floor had been abandoned in a hurry.

Coffee remained warm beside the sink. A chair lay overturned near the back door. Blood marked the edge of a stone fireplace.

“Whose blood?” Ethan asked.

“Too soon to know,” Jonah replied through the feed.

Cal found the hidden stairway beneath a rug.

The basement room matched Oliver’s description.

A narrow cot.

A camera mounted behind dark glass.

A metal chair fitted with wrist restraints.

Microelectrode wires hung beside a portable monitor.

Ethan had seen rooms like it during overseas recoveries. He had never imagined one built beneath his father’s property.

Jonah recovered three video drives.

The most recent footage showed Richard dragging Oliver into the room.

Richard’s hair was gray, his movements slower than Ethan remembered, but his anger remained familiar.

He demanded the lighthouse sequence.

Oliver refused.

Richard struck him across the face.

Ethan turned away from the screen.

Mara did not.

Several hours later, another man entered wearing a black mask and the silver Rook ring. He used the microelectrodes while Richard watched.

Oliver cried for his father.

Richard said nothing.

When the masked man increased the current, Richard grabbed his arm.

“You were never supposed to damage him.”

The masked man shoved Richard against the wall.

“You wanted the archive. This is how we open it.”

Richard was not innocent.

He had kidnapped Oliver, lied to him, and struck him.

But someone else controlled the operation.

The footage ended when Richard tried to remove Oliver from the chair. A struggle followed. The camera fell sideways.

Blood struck the fireplace.

The masked man dragged Richard from the room.

Oliver crawled toward an access vent and disappeared from view.

He had escaped alone.

“That’s when I ran,” Oliver whispered from the conference-room doorway.

Ethan turned.

Lawson had brought him in a wheelchair after the boy insisted on seeing whether the cabin was safe.

“You should be resting.”

“I need to show you.”

Oliver pointed toward the screen.

“Under the cot.”

Cal lifted the mattress.

A small smartphone had been taped beneath the frame.

It belonged to Rebecca.

Ethan’s former wife had been missing since Oliver disappeared.

The phone contained one unsent video.

Rebecca sat inside a parked car, speaking quickly.

“Ethan, your father contacted me three weeks ago. He said Rook Team buried evidence that proves the Bellweather fire was ordered from inside the government.”

She looked over her shoulder.

“I didn’t believe him until someone entered Oliver’s school records using my identity.”

Rebecca had begun investigating quietly. She found payments connecting Richard to Silas Grant and a private intelligence contractor called Dominion Response.

Her final words came as headlights approached behind her.

“If anything happens to me, ask Mara what she removed from Bellweather before it burned.”

The video ended.

Everyone looked toward Mara.

She remained perfectly still.

“What did you take?” Ethan asked.

“A case file.”

“You told us nothing survived.”

“I was ordered to secure it.”

“By Grant?”

“Yes.”

“What was inside?”

Mara removed the silver ring from beneath her shirt.

“Proof that Richard was never our source.”

Ethan stared.

“Then who was he?”

“The target.”

The hospital lights flickered once.

Oliver’s transmitter, sealed inside evidence storage, suddenly began broadcasting again.

On Mara’s monitor, a new message appeared:

BELLWEATHER OPENS WHEN THE FATHER LEAVES THE CHILD.

Someone wanted Ethan away from Vanderbilt.

👉 Rebecca’s message implicated Mara, while the transmitter revealed that Oliver’s hospital room was still part of the trap.
