Chapter 8 - RICHARD’S LAST BARGAINRichard escaped Grant’s room with Rebecca.
He contacted Ethan through the Bellweather console, gasping as alarms sounded around him.
“We have four minutes before he moves us.”
“Where are you?”
“Old Dominion medical center beneath the quarry road.”
“You took Oliver for him.”
“I took Oliver because Grant said Rebecca had reopened the archive.”
“You struck my son.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“You told him I wasn’t coming.”
“I needed him afraid enough to repeat the lighthouse sequence.”
Ethan’s hands tightened around the console.
“You don’t get to help now and call yourself his grandfather.”
“I’m not asking forgiveness.”
“What are you asking?”
“A chance to keep Grant from choosing the boys.”
Richard knew the Homecoming protocol.
The successor countdown would not kill either child immediately. It would select one as the archive’s living biometric administrator.
The selected boy would gain access to every hidden Rook asset.
The other would be marked as a security threat.
“What happens to the threat?” Mara asked.
Richard looked at her through the screen.
“You wrote that section.”
Mara’s face went still.
She had designed a contingency process for compromised operatives years earlier. She believed it applied only to digital credentials.
Grant adapted it to living subjects.
The unselected child’s hospital chart would be altered to show catastrophic neurological instability. A medical transfer team would remove him before anyone understood what happened.
At Vanderbilt, two ambulances had already arrived beneath false federal authority.
Lawson and Megan barricaded the pediatric corridor.
Ethan ordered state police to secure the building.
The dispatcher warned that several officers had received competing commands carrying valid federal codes.
Homecoming was using the old Rook network to confuse every response.
Richard gave Ethan the override phrase.
“Say ‘the keeper rejects the sea’ while both boys touch the same disconnected circuit.”
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
“Then give me proof.”
Richard removed a small American flag pin from his coat. Inside was a memory chip containing Grant’s private command logs.
He handed it to Rebecca.
Before she could upload it, gunfire sounded beyond their room.
Grant’s guards had found them.
Richard pushed Rebecca through a maintenance door and sealed himself on the other side.
“Go!” he shouted.
Ethan watched his father turn toward the approaching men.
The video cut out.
Rebecca reached an exterior tunnel and transmitted the command logs.
They proved Grant had arranged Richard’s false death, Oliver’s abduction, the hidden hospital rooms, and the reactivation of Rook Team.
They also contained messages from someone identified as MQ.
Mara Quinn.
Grant’s most recent message to MQ read:
Ethan called. Homecoming proceeds. Bring him to Bellweather alive.
Ethan faced Mara.
“Is that you?”
“No.”
“Those are your initials.”
“My command certificate was copied when Grant took the Bellweather case file.”
“Rebecca said you removed it.”
“I did.”
“And kept it for six years.”
“Yes.”
Jonah stepped between them.
“This can wait. The boys have less than two minutes.”
Mara handed Ethan her weapon.
“If you think I’m part of it, take this.”
He did.
She also gave him the command ring.
“Homecoming still recognizes me as controller. Use the ring at Vanderbilt.”
“Why would Grant need me alive?”
Mara looked toward the archive.
“Because you were never just a field operative.”
Ethan’s personnel file opened beneath the command logs.
His designation was not Rook One.
It was Home Zero.
