Chapter 7 - THE PATIENT BESIDE OLIVERDr. Lawson disconnected Oliver’s room from the hospital network.

The archive transmission still reached a concealed receiver beneath the floor.

Megan discovered the device after hearing a faint electronic pulse under the bed. It had been installed before Oliver arrived.

Someone knew which room he would receive.

Hospital administrators claimed assignments were random.

They were not.

Oliver’s bed had been reserved under his name six hours before he was found behind the grocery store.

The adjacent room had also been reserved.

Its patient was listed as Samuel Cole.

Ethan had no son named Samuel.

Megan entered with security.

A teenage boy lay unconscious beneath a blanket, connected to an IV. His face carried older scars along the jaw and temples.

The chart identified him as sixteen.

The admissions photograph was only two hours old.

The surname Cole had been added afterward.

Lawson examined the boy.

He had the same microelectrode punctures behind his ear as Oliver.

A black transmitter was embedded beneath his hospital gown.

When the archive signal reached Vanderbilt, both transmitters activated.

Oliver’s heart monitor displayed a new message:

KEY ONE CONFIRMED

The other boy’s monitor showed:

KEY ZERO AWAKE

His eyes opened.

He looked toward Oliver through the connecting window.

“Ethan came,” he whispered.

Lawson leaned closer.

“Do you know Mr. Cole?”

The teenager smiled weakly.

“He’s my father.”

Megan immediately called Ethan.

He listened from Bellweather, stunned.

“I have one child.”

The boy gave his name as Noah Grant.

Silas Grant’s son.

He claimed Ethan was his biological father.

Mara looked away from the phone.

Ethan noticed.

“What do you know?”

“Grant’s wife was part of Rook medical support.”

“That doesn’t make me Noah’s father.”

“No.”

“But something else does.”

Six years earlier, after Ethan suffered a concussion during the Bellweather operation, he spent several days inside a private clinic. He remembered medication, headaches, and Rebecca beside him.

Medical staff collected blood and reproductive samples while claiming they needed toxicology screening.

Grant used Ethan’s material in an illegal fertility program designed to create biological leverage against field operatives.

“You knew?” Ethan asked Mara.

“I found the files after Bellweather.”

“And said nothing.”

“I didn’t know a child had been born.”

“You knew enough to tell me my body had been used.”

“Yes.”

Ethan felt sick.

The archive contained Noah’s genetic report.

The match was genuine.

Silas Grant had raised Ethan’s biological son as his own while training him inside the Homecoming program.

Oliver was not the only child Grant had turned into a key.

Noah had been conditioned to unlock the archive’s hidden command layer through a stress-response pattern linked to Ethan’s DNA.

Grant needed both boys connected simultaneously.

One raised by Ethan.

One raised against him.

At Vanderbilt, Noah began convulsing as the transmitter beneath his gown overheated.

Lawson prepared emergency surgery.

Oliver climbed from his bed despite the pain.

“That’s what happened to me at Grandpa’s cabin.”

He reached through the open connecting doorway and grabbed Noah’s hand.

Both monitors stabilized instantly.

The archive recognized the contact.

A final folder opened on Lawson’s screen.

HOME DIRECTIVE: SELECT SUCCESSOR

Two names appeared.

Oliver Cole.

Noah Grant.

A countdown began.

Megan pulled both monitor cables from the network.

The timer continued.

Grant’s voice came through the room speaker.
