Chapter 10 - THE VOICE BEHIND THE DOORDr. Lawson’s office stood at the end of the pediatric corridor.

Police found no visible explosives, wires, or armed guards. The electronic lock accepted Lawson’s badge, but the handle would not move.

Something blocked the door from inside.

Ethan ordered Oliver, Noah, and Rebecca moved toward a secure elevator.

Oliver refused to release his hand.

“You said you’ve got me.”

“I do.”

“Then don’t go where I can’t see you.”

Ethan knelt.

“I need to make sure the man who hurt you cannot reach this room again.”

Noah watched from beside Rebecca.

“And me?”

Ethan looked at the son he had met less than an hour earlier.

“You’re coming with us when this is over.”

Noah’s expression remained guarded.

“You don’t know me.”

“No. But I’m going to.”

It was not a promise of instant family.

It was a promise to remain present long enough to learn.

Mara and Jonah forced Lawson’s office door.

A filing cabinet had been dragged against it.

Behind the desk stood a wall of monitors showing every angle of Oliver’s room, Noah’s hidden room, Bellweather House, Richard’s cabin, and the hospital entrances.

Grant was gone.

His coat remained on the chair.

A warm cup of coffee sat beside the keyboard.

The room connected to an old maintenance tunnel beneath Vanderbilt’s original wing.

Grant had been watching the entire crisis from yards away.

Rebecca opened a sealed drawer.

Inside were identity files for every member of Rook Team.

Some contained photographs taken only hours earlier.

Ethan’s file included a death certificate scheduled to activate at midnight.

Mara’s included an arrest warrant for kidnapping Oliver.

Rebecca’s declared her mentally unstable.

Noah’s identified Silas Grant as his biological father despite the verified DNA result.

Oliver’s file contained emergency guardianship papers transferring him to Richard.

Grant had prepared multiple official realities and could release whichever one served him.

Jonah recovered a live communications terminal.

One channel remained active.

The encrypted number Ethan had called from the corridor was displayed on-screen.

His phone began ringing.

The same black circle appeared.

Mara stood directly beside him.

Ethan answered.

The distorted voice asked:

“Who’s the target?”

Ethan looked at Mara.

She was not speaking.

“Silas Grant.”

The voice laughed.

“You still think Grant is the director.”

Oliver heard it through the speaker.

His entire body stiffened.

“Dad…”

“What is it?”

“That’s the voice from Grandpa’s basement.”

Mara moved toward the phone.

“Oliver, did you ever see the person speaking?”

The boy pointed at her.

Not at the device.

At Mara.

“She wore your face on the screen.”

Mara stopped.

The office monitors changed simultaneously.

A live feed appeared from the supposedly secured elevator carrying Rebecca, Noah, and the police escort.

The doors had opened onto an unmarked underground level.

Armed figures surrounded them wearing Rook insignia.

At their center stood a woman identical to Mara Quinn.

Same face.

Same posture.

Same silver ring.

The double looked into the elevator camera.

“Home Zero has been recovered,” she said. “Bring both keys.”

Ethan turned toward the real Mara.

She stared at her duplicate, horrified.

“I was never the only Mara.”

Behind them, the maintenance tunnel door slammed shut.

Oliver’s monitor began sounding from the distant hospital room.

Ethan’s phone displayed a final message:

SELECT THE REAL TEAM BEFORE THE CHILDREN DO.

Then heavy footsteps began climbing toward Lawson’s office from beneath the hospital.
