Chapter 1

They Celebrated Her Broken Arm Until Police Arrived and Revealed Whose House They Were Sitting In.

Claire Lawson sat at the long dining table in a red satin dress with her broken right arm strapped tightly inside a dark blue sling.

The roast dinner had not been touched.

The wine had.

Margaret Mercer held her glass like a queen holding court. Ashley Mercer smirked beside her in a glittering gold dress. Ryan Mercer sat across from Claire with his tuxedo shirt open at the collar, bow tie hanging loose, confidence shining all over his face.

They had spent twenty minutes laughing about her arm.

How clumsy she was.

How dramatic she looked.

How lucky she was that Ryan still “put up with her.”

Then the glass entrance doors opened.

A female investigator in a gray suit stepped into the Beverly Hills mansion between two police officers.

Ryan’s chair scraped back.

“Who invited you into my house?”

Claire placed her wineglass down with her left hand.

Slowly.

Carefully.

“I did—because it was never yours.”

Margaret’s glass stopped halfway to her lips.

Ashley’s smile vanished.

The investigator placed a sealed folder beside Ryan’s dinner plate.

“Mr. Mercer, step away from the property documents.”

Ryan’s face drained.

Margaret stood so fast her chair struck the marble floor.

“You cannot throw family into the street!”

Claire rose, pain tightening her face, but her voice stayed calm.

“You celebrated my broken arm under my roof.”

Ryan looked down and finally noticed Claire’s phone recording beside her untouched plate.

The officers stepped closer.

The folder remained sealed.

No arrest happened yet.

No one was removed.
