Chapter 9

The officers did not arrest Ryan at the table.
No one dragged him from the room.
No legal outcome was announced.
The investigator kept the folder sealed.
That restraint made the scene more terrifying for the Mercers.
They could not attack what had not been revealed.
Could not explain away documents they had not seen.
Could not claim victory because no final ruling existed.
They were trapped in uncertainty, and Claire knew people like them hated uncertainty more than consequences.
Margaret sank back into her chair, wineglass forgotten.
Ashley looked toward the entrance as if calculating whether she could leave without appearing guilty.
Ryan stayed standing.
His tuxedo looked suddenly disordered.
Open shirt.
Loose bow tie.
A man dressed for elegance and caught in exposure.
Claire’s phone still recorded beside the untouched plate.
The investigator reached toward the sealed folder.
Ryan flinched.
Claire saw it.
So did the investigator.
That one involuntary reaction said enough for the moment.
Claire turned slightly, facing all three of them.
“You laughed when I walked in with this sling,” she said.
No one answered.
“You asked whether I had learned my lesson.”
Ryan’s face tightened.
Margaret looked away.
Claire continued, voice low.
“I did.”
She looked around the dining room.
The mansion.
The doors.
The officers.
The folder.

“I learned exactly who was comfortable here.”
