Chapter 5

The lead investigator entered with the calm of someone who had no interest in drama.
That frightened Ryan more than a shouting officer would have.
She wore a fitted gray suit and carried a tablet with a sealed document folder pressed against it.
Two police officers stayed near the entrance, professional and restrained.
No weapons drawn.
No handcuffs.
No spectacle.
Just authority.
Ryan stood immediately.
“Who invited you into my house?”
Every word was loud enough for the table.
Claire placed her wineglass down.
“I did—because it was never yours.”
For the first time all evening, Margaret stopped performing.
Her eyes moved from Claire to Ryan.
Ashley’s mouth opened slightly.
Ryan laughed once, but the sound failed halfway through.
“That’s absurd.”
The investigator approached the table.
“Mr. Mercer, step away from the property documents.”
His gaze dropped.
Claire saw recognition flash across his face.
He knew exactly which documents she meant.
That mattered.
The sealed folder landed beside his dinner plate without being opened.
The officer near the entrance discreetly activated his body camera.
Ryan looked at Claire with hatred sharpened by panic.
“You did this during dinner?”
Claire’s answer was quiet.
“You chose the audience.”
The room absorbed that.
So did Margaret.
So did Ashley.
