Chapter 4

Margaret Mercer enjoyed cruelty most when it sounded like etiquette.

She never shouted if she could slice softly.

“Claire, dear, you should hold your glass with your good hand.”

“Claire, dear, you do look fragile lately.”

“Claire, dear, perhaps red was bold with a sling.”

Ashley followed her mother’s rhythm.

A laugh here.

A glance there.

A whisper just loud enough.

Ryan smiled through all of it.

That was what Claire watched.

Not the insults.

His enjoyment.

He leaned back in his chair, letting his family circle her like a joke they had all agreed to tell.

At one point, Margaret lifted her glass and said, “To resilience.”

Ashley added, “And better balance.”

The table laughed.

Claire did not.

Her phone stayed beside the plate.

Recording.

Ryan noticed her silence.

“Oh, come on,” he said. “We’re teasing. You used to have a sense of humor.”

Claire looked at her untouched dinner.

“I still do.”

“Then smile.”

She raised her eyes.

“No.”

The room cooled.

Margaret’s expression tightened.

Ashley’s hand stopped around her wineglass.

Ryan’s face shifted with irritation.

That one word always disturbed him.

No.

Claire had said it too softly for years.

Tonight, she said it clearly.

Before Ryan could respond, headlights moved across the glass entrance doors.

The investigator had arrived.

Claire did not look toward the entrance.

She watched Ryan instead.
