Chapter 8

Claire remembered the hospital discharge instructions folded in her purse.
Rest.
Limit movement.
Keep the arm supported.
Avoid stress.
She almost laughed at the last one.
Stress was standing across from her in a tuxedo.
Stress had invited his mother and sister to dinner to mock her into submission.
Stress had tried to access property documents after telling everyone she was too injured to manage anything.
But pain had clarified Claire’s choices.
She could recover quietly while Ryan rewrote the story.
Or she could preserve the story while he was still arrogant enough to speak.
The investigator turned toward Ryan.
“We have questions regarding attempted access to secured property files.”
Ryan’s face tightened.
“I don’t answer questions without counsel.”
“Then don’t,” Claire said.
He looked at her.
“You think this makes you powerful?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Claire took one step away from the chair.
Every movement cost her.
Still, she stayed upright.
“It makes me done.”
That sentence struck him harder than anger.
Because Ryan could fight rage.
He could twist tears.
He could apologize around fear.
But done had a different sound.
Done meant doors closing.
Accounts reviewed.
Files preserved.
Witnesses present.
Done meant Claire was no longer asking him to become decent.

She was documenting that he had chosen not to.
