Chapter 7

Ashley had been quiet since the folder appeared.

That was unusual.

Ashley Mercer usually spoke before thinking because beauty and money had protected her from consequences for most of her life.

Now she gripped her wineglass with both hands.

“Ryan,” she whispered, “what documents?”

Ryan did not look at her.

That scared her more than if he had snapped.

Margaret turned on him next.

“What is she talking about?”

Ryan’s eyes stayed on Claire.

“She’s trying to embarrass us.”

Claire looked at the table.

The roast dinner.

The wineglasses.

The white floral arrangements.

The plates set as though this were a celebration instead of a trap built by cruelty.

“No,” she said. “You embarrassed yourselves before they walked in.”

The investigator tapped her tablet once.

No screen was shown.

No readable document appeared.

“Mrs. Lawson, confirm for the record: you requested we enter after the dinner began?”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

“And the recording device on the table belongs to you?”

“Yes.”

Ryan’s gaze snapped to the phone beside her plate.

He went still.

The phone had been there the whole time.

Plain.

Visible.

Ignored.

Like Claire.

His confidence had made him careless.

Ashley lowered her glass slowly.

Margaret’s face tightened with rage and fear.

Ryan’s voice dropped.

“Claire, turn it off.”

She met his eyes.

“No.”

Again, that word.
