Chapter 6

Ryan reached toward the folder.

The investigator blocked his hand with one decisive movement.

Not violent.

Not dramatic.

Final.

“Do not touch it.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“These are private marital documents.”

Claire almost smiled.

Private.

That word again.

Private injury.

Private argument.

Private family dinner.

Private property documents.

Private was where Ryan liked the truth buried.

The investigator held his stare.

“Step away from the table.”

Ryan did not move.

One officer took a single step forward.

That was enough.

Ryan withdrew his hand.

Margaret rose from her chair, pearls trembling against her throat.

“You cannot throw family into the street!”

Claire turned toward her slowly.

The sentence told on Margaret.

No one had mentioned the street.

No one had mentioned eviction.

No one had said what the papers allowed or did not allow.

But Margaret had already imagined loss.

Not Claire’s injury.

Not Claire’s pain.

Loss of comfort.

Loss of status.

Loss of the mansion where she had raised her glass over a woman’s broken arm.

Claire stood carefully, using only her uninjured arm for balance.

Pain moved through her face.

She did not hide it.

“You celebrated my broken arm under my roof.”

The room fell silent.

Margaret looked at the sling.

This time, not with amusement.

With fear.
