Chapter 2

Ryan had hosted the dinner to humiliate her.
Claire knew that before she came downstairs.
He called it “family reconciliation.”
Margaret called it “moving past unpleasantness.”
Ashley called it “finally acting normal.”
Claire called it evidence.
She dressed slowly because the sling made every movement difficult. The red satin dress had been chosen by Ryan weeks earlier, before the injury, for a charity event they never attended.
Now he wanted her wearing it at the family table.
A pretty wife.
A broken arm.
A room full of people willing to call pain an inconvenience.
When Claire stepped into the dining room, Margaret looked at the sling first.
Then smiled.
“Well,” she said, “at least it matches nothing.”
Ashley laughed.
Ryan did not tell them to stop.
He poured wine.
He lifted his glass.
“To moving forward.”
Claire sat down.
She placed her phone beside her plate, screen down, already recording audio.
Ryan saw it and smirked.
“Still attached to that thing?”
Claire looked at him.
“Habit.”
That was true.
As a financial investigator, Claire had built her career on habits.

The sealed folder was already on its way.
The investigator had already been briefed.
The officers had already been told not to enter until Claire gave the signal.
So Claire sat quietly while Margaret raised her wineglass and toasted the arm Ryan said she had broken by falling.
Claire did not correct her.
