Chapter 10 - The Woman Calling Herself CelesteEvelyn was medically discharged under strict instructions to rest.

Instead, she moved with Noah and Lucas to a guarded Vale residence outside Franklin. Graham was permitted supervised visits with the twins but remained barred from staying overnight.

He asked Evelyn whether their marriage had any chance.

She looked at the man who had once held her hand through labor and later shoved her into snow.

“I don’t know whether remorse is real when it begins after the accounts freeze.”

He accepted the answer.

No reconciliation followed.

Marcus advised against traveling to the mountain house.

The second Marcus agreed.

It was the first position they shared.

Evelyn refused both.

“She has Daniel. She may be my mother.”

“Or a trained substitute,” Marcus said.

“Then I need evidence.”

A state tactical team surrounded the mountain property while Evelyn joined remotely from a command vehicle. She would not enter alone despite Celeste’s demand.

The woman met officers at the door willingly.

Daniel slept in her arms.

Vivian and Alexander had already left through a tunnel.

The woman identified herself as Celeste Vale.

Fresh DNA testing confirmed she was Evelyn’s biological mother.

Twenty years of grief became a fact standing ten feet away.

When Celeste entered the command vehicle, Evelyn did not embrace her.

“Why didn’t you come home?”

Celeste looked at the twins.

“Because Alexander controlled every route back to you.”

“You had twenty years.”

“I tried three times.”

“What happened?”

“Adrian stopped me the first time. Vivian stopped me the second. Marcus stopped me the third.”

Both Marcus men were brought into separate secured rooms.

Celeste pointed toward the newcomer.

“That is Michael Kane.”

Then toward Evelyn’s longtime counsel.

“That is Marcus Vale Kane. My son.”

The identity dispute seemed settled.

Michael laughed.

“She is reading the script Alexander gave her.”

Celeste produced a scar on her wrist matching a childhood photograph and answered private family questions no outsider should know.

Still, Evelyn had learned that memory, voice, and documents could all be engineered.

“Why did you agree to the embryo transfer?” Evelyn asked.

“I didn’t.”

The video directive was genuine, but it authorized birth only if Evelyn chose it as an adult. Alexander removed that condition when instructing the clinic.

The gestational carrier had been Caroline Shaw’s younger sister, Jenna.

She believed she was carrying a child for a deceased woman’s surviving family.

After delivery, Vivian took Daniel and threatened Jenna into silence.

Celeste learned about the child through the hidden founder network and went to the mountain house to protect him.

“Why stay with Vivian?”

“To make her believe I wanted the trust challenged.”

“Did you?”

Celeste hesitated.

“I wanted Daniel recognized as my son.”

“That gives you control through him.”

“It gives him protection.”

“Those are not always the same thing.”

Celeste’s eyes filled with pain.

“No.”

Evelyn understood that her mother had survived decades inside systems built on hidden authority. She might genuinely love Daniel and still see his shares as necessary leverage.

Celeste revealed Alexander’s current plan.

He would convene an emergency Vale Crown board session in Nashville. Vivian would present Daniel as Celeste’s lawful son. Warren Price would declare Evelyn compromised by postpartum trauma and Marcus compromised by identity fraud.

Celeste was expected to testify that Evelyn lacked the maturity to control the company.

“What were you going to say?” Evelyn asked.

“That the heirs should share power.”

“Under whose supervision?”

“Mine.”

There it was.

Celeste did not intend to return merely as a mother.

She intended to reclaim the empire taken after her disappearance.

Marcus looked devastated but unsurprised.

Evelyn faced them both.

“I spent my life waiting for a dead mother and trusting a hidden brother. Neither of you gets to arrive now and decide I am the child in the room.”

Celeste lowered her eyes.

Then Daniel began crying.

While Evelyn watched her mother comfort him, Noah’s medical monitor sent an alert.

An unauthorized device was transmitting from inside his blanket.

Security opened the seam.

A tiny audio receiver had been sewn beside his hospital bracelet.

It had recorded every conversation since Whitecrest.

The device’s last connection went to Graham’s private phone.

Evelyn turned toward him.

Graham stared at the transmitter.

“I didn’t put that there.”

The surveillance application on his phone had been installed under Vivian’s administrator account.

May you like

But it had uploaded every recording to a user named Celeste Vale.

👉 Celeste claimed she returned to protect the family, yet the twins had been secretly transmitting Evelyn’s private conversations directly to her account.
