Chapter 9 - Two Men Named Marcus KaneThe second Marcus remained in a secured interview room.

He looked like the man beside Evelyn but not perfectly.

Same height.

Same dark hair.

Same scar beneath the chin.

Yet the second man favored his left leg and wore his watch on the opposite wrist.

State investigators collected DNA from both.

The newcomer introduced himself as Marcus Vale Kane.

He claimed Alexander abducted him at nineteen and forced another young man to assume his identity inside Adrian’s security office.

The Marcus Evelyn knew was allegedly named Michael Kane, the biological son of Celeste’s former bodyguard.

Evelyn’s Marcus listened through the monitor.

“That story was designed for this moment.”

The newcomer produced childhood photographs with Celeste, sealed school records, and letters written in her hand.

Marcus had similar evidence.

Both histories overlapped.

Celeste had apparently maintained two boys under one protected identity.

One biological son.

One decoy.

She believed Alexander would target any known male heir, so she created a replacement record capable of keeping her real child hidden.

The system had preserved the deception too well.

Now no one knew which man was Celeste’s son.

The first DNA result confirmed both men were closely related to Evelyn.

Not equally.

Marcus beside her shared a maternal half-sibling relationship.

The newcomer shared a more distant relationship consistent with first cousin.

The answer seemed clear.

Then the laboratory director reported sample contamination.

Both men’s archived profiles had been mixed for years.

Fresh blood testing still favored Evelyn’s Marcus, but the newcomer’s lawyers challenged the chain of custody.

Alexander needed uncertainty, not truth.

As long as Marcus’s identity remained disputed, his forty-percent share could be frozen.

That would leave Evelyn unable to outvote the neutral administrator and Daniel’s temporary guardian.

Vivian could control Daniel’s votes.

Alexander could control the administrator.

Together, they could rule Vale Crown.

The second Marcus requested private access to Evelyn.

She refused.

He sent her a recorded message instead.

“Ask the man beside you what happened to Celeste after the aircraft crash. He knows because he traveled with her for nine months.”

Evelyn faced Marcus.

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“You said you lost her at the rendezvous.”

“I found her again three days later.”

She felt the familiar pain of another delayed truth.

Marcus explained.

Celeste entered a protected residence in Vermont under the name Sarah Kane. She remained there for nine months while collecting evidence against Alexander and Vivian.

Then she disappeared from the residence.

Blood was found.

No body.

Marcus feared she had been killed.

“Why hide the nine months?”

“Because I signed the placement papers. Vivian altered them into the death authorization you saw.”

“You let me mourn her while she was alive.”

“She ordered me not to contact you.”

“And you obeyed.”

“Yes.”

The second Marcus’s message continued.

“Celeste did not vanish from Vermont. She left with the man you call Marcus. Only one returned.”

Evelyn’s Marcus shook his head.

“That is false.”

“Can you prove it?”

“No.”

Again, the system created a gap wide enough for suspicion.

Graham entered with information from Vivian’s ledger.

A property in Vermont had received monthly payments under the name Sarah Kane for twenty years.

The account remained active.

Someone connected to Celeste’s protected identity might still be alive.

Evelyn called the property.

A woman answered.

Her voice sounded older, but Evelyn recognized the cadence from childhood recordings.

“Evelyn?”

She could not speak.

The woman continued.

“Do not trust either Marcus. Alexander created both.”

The line disconnected.

Investigators traced the call.

It originated from the mountain house where Vivian held Daniel.

Celeste—or someone using her voice—was with them.

Then the live security feed showed Vivian leaving the property.

She carried no baby.

Alexander followed.

A third person appeared in the doorway.

A woman in her early fifties held Daniel against her chest.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

The woman looked exactly like Celeste would have looked if she had aged naturally.

She raised the newborn toward the camera.

“Come alone,” she said. “Or your brother disappears the way I did.”

👉 Evelyn’s mother appeared alive with the hidden newborn, but she warned that both men claiming to protect Evelyn had been created by Alexander.
