Chapter 1 - The Twins in the Foyer

A betrayed wife confronts her husband and best friend with a hidden medical report that makes his own mother question the twins.
Justin arrived at his parents’ mansion smiling.
He threw the front door open like a man returning victorious, his black suit still perfect, his open-collar white shirt crisp beneath the chandelier light.
Rachel entered beside him in a pale-pink satin dress, blonde hair falling over her shoulders, one hand resting proudly near the two newborn carriers placed carefully in the foyer.
The babies slept safely, wrapped and still.
Justin dropped his suitcase onto the marble floor.
The sound cracked through the wealthy family residence.
From the living room, Martha appeared in a burgundy evening dress, champagne glass in one trembling hand.
At first, she smiled.
Then she saw the twins.
Her face went white.
The champagne glass slipped from her fingers and shattered across the marble.
Justin’s smile faltered.
Rachel’s triumphant expression froze.
Martha looked from Justin to the babies, then toward the closed mahogany study doors.
“She… still hasn’t told you about that?”
Justin seized his mother by the shoulders, not hurting her, but shaking with rage and confusion.
“Told me what?”
Before Martha could answer, the study doors opened.
Claire sat behind the dark mahogany desk in an ivory satin robe, pale but composed, surgical report in one hand.
Divorce documents, financial folders, and hospital photographs covered the desk.
Her heartbreak was gone.
Only cold certainty remained.
“You signed away our marriage before asking one important question.”
Rachel recoiled.
Justin stared.
Claire rose, slammed the medical report onto the desk, and sent the hospital photographs sliding toward him.
Rachel lunged for the report.
Claire pulled it back first.
“Those babies are his,” Rachel cried. “You’re only trying to destroy us.”
Claire held the sealed folder toward Justin.
Before he could open it, Martha lunged forward and clamped one hand over it.
Claire looked into Justin’s eyes.
“Ask your mother why she begged me never to show you this.”

Justin froze between his wife, his mistress, his mother, and the unopened truth.
