Chapter 7 - The Divorce Folder

The divorce folder was black.

Expensive.

Signed.

Justin had thought it was the cleanest object in the room.

His exit.

His freedom.

His proof that Claire had been left behind legally, neatly, and without leverage.

Now it sat beside the medical report like a companion mistake.

Claire touched the folder.

“You signed this before you came here.”

Justin’s eyes narrowed.

“You signed too.”

“I signed because I was done begging.”

Rachel let out a shaky laugh.

“Good. Then why are we still talking?”

Claire looked at her.

“Because divorce does not erase fraud.”

Rachel’s face went stiff.

Justin turned sharply.

“Fraud?”

Claire did not explain.

The complete evidence stayed hidden.

The final legal outcome remained unseen.

But the word did enough.

It moved through the room and found every guilty reaction.

Rachel’s fingers twisted together.

Martha gripped the back of a leather chair.

Justin stared at the laptop on the desk.

“What’s on that?”

Claire said nothing.

Rachel’s eyes flicked toward it.

Justin saw.

Another reaction.

Another crack.

He laughed once, breathless and ugly.

“This is insane.”

Claire nodded slightly.

“It felt that way when I believed you.”

The words struck harder than anger.

Justin looked wounded, which would have mattered once.

Now Claire saw only the shape of a man realizing his story no longer protected him.

He reached for the divorce folder.

Claire placed one hand over it.

“No.”

His eyes flashed.

“That is mine.”

“Our marriage was mine too,” she said. “You didn’t mind tearing that open.”

Martha flinched.

Rachel looked toward the foyer as if calculating whether she could leave.

But the twins were there.

The photographs were there.

The report was there.

And Justin was no longer moving with her.
