Chapter 9 - The Folder Between Three Hands

Claire extended the sealed medical folder toward Justin.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Rachel’s face collapsed.
Martha lunged.
Her hand clamped over the folder before Justin could open it.
For one suspended second, all three were connected by paper.
Claire holding one side.
Justin gripping the edge.
Martha covering the seal with desperate fingers.
Rachel stood behind him with both hands over her mouth, eyes stretched wide with panic.
The laptop glowed behind Claire.
The hospital photographs lay scattered across the desk.
The divorce folder remained open.
The newborn carriers sat safely near the foyer.
Justin looked at his mother’s hand.
“Move.”
Martha shook her head violently.
“I did what I thought was best.”
Claire’s eyes flashed.
“For whom?”
Martha looked at her.
No answer.
Justin’s hand tightened around the folder.
The paper bent slightly.
Claire did not let go.
“Careful,” she said.
He looked at her.
Not with rage now.
With terror.
Because for the first time, he understood that opening the folder might not simply reveal Rachel’s lie or Claire’s revenge.
It might reveal his own life had been edited by the people closest to him.
Rachel whispered, “Justin, don’t.”
He did not turn to her.
Martha whispered the same thing.
“Justin, don’t.”
Two women telling him not to read.
One woman holding the truth still and letting him choose.
Claire’s expression remained cold, but her eyes were wet.
She had loved him once.
Enough to suffer in silence longer than she should have.
Enough to almost keep the report buried.
But not enough to let him build a new family on a lie while calling her barren, broken, and replaceable.
Justin’s fingers trembled on the folder.

His world narrowed to the sealed edge.
