Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind the Desk

Claire had not dressed for battle.
That was what made her frightening.
She wore an ivory satin robe with lace trim, her blonde hair pinned into a loose updo, her face pale from sleepless nights and humiliation.
But she sat behind the mahogany desk like someone who had already survived the worst of the room.
The divorce folder lay open near her left hand.
Justin’s signature was inside.
Rachel’s hospital photographs rested beneath the edge of a financial folder.
A laptop glowed beside a black smartphone.
A fountain pen lay aligned with the papers.
Everything had been placed with care.
Justin understood strategy.
He knew what a prepared desk looked like.
This was not emotion.
This was evidence.
He turned toward Claire.
“You broke into my office?”
Claire’s expression did not change.
“Our home, Justin.”
Rachel laughed sharply.
“She says that now?”
Claire looked at her.
“You said it stopped being mine when he signed the divorce folder.”
Rachel’s smile twitched.
Martha closed her eyes.
Justin noticed.
“You knew about the divorce papers?” he asked his mother.
Martha whispered, “I knew enough.”
That answer cracked the room open another inch.
Claire picked up the surgical report but did not let him see it.
His eyes followed the movement.
“What is that?”
Claire looked at him for a long moment.
“The question you should have asked before you humiliated me.”
Rachel stepped forward.
“Do not listen to her.”
Claire’s gaze sharpened.
“He has been listening to you for months.”
The sentence landed with quiet violence.
Justin looked from Rachel to Claire.
Rachel’s face had begun to change.
Not guilt.
Defense.
She moved closer to the newborn carriers, then stopped, as if suddenly aware every protective gesture could be misread.
Claire saw that too.
She spoke more softly.
“The babies are safe. This is not about hurting them.”
Justin’s eyes flashed.
“Then what is it about?”
Claire looked toward Martha.
Martha shook her head, begging without words.
Claire’s voice remained cold.
“It is about the lie that made you believe they proved something.”
May you like
Justin’s face drained.
