Chapter 8 - Justin Looks at His Mother

Justin had spent his life believing Martha’s tears.

She cried beautifully.

Softly.

Selectively.

Tears at charity galas.

Tears at family weddings.

Tears when she wanted forgiveness without confession.

Tonight, her tears looked different.

Not staged.

Terrified.

He stared at her.

“Tell me.”

Martha shook her head.

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“No, Justin.”

Rachel stepped in quickly.

“She’s sick with stress. Look at her.”

Claire’s voice cut through.

“Martha is not confused.”

Martha sobbed once.

Justin’s eyes did not leave his mother.

“What did you know?”

Martha looked at the twins.

Then the surgical report.

Then Claire.

Her silence became an answer.

Justin’s face twisted violently.

The handsome certainty he wore into the house cracked under confusion.

He turned on Rachel.

“What did you know?”

Rachel backed away.

“Nothing that matters.”

Claire’s eyes hardened.

“That is exactly how every lie survives.”

Rachel snapped, “You are just bitter because you lost him.”

Claire stepped closer.

Her voice remained controlled.

“I lost a husband. You may have lost a story.”

Rachel’s mouth froze open.

Justin looked between them.

The twins remained sleeping, mercifully untouched by the adult terror around them.

Martha suddenly moved toward the folder.

Claire lifted it out of reach.

Martha whispered, “Please don’t.”

Justin stared at her hand.

The same hand that had held him as a child.

Signed his school forms.

Touched his face at his wedding.

Now reaching to block him from learning something about his own body, his marriage, and possibly his future.

His voice broke.

“Why would you keep this from me?”

Martha’s lips trembled.

No answer came.
